The twin crises of climate breakdown and biodiversity loss are the most serious issue of our time. Buildings and construction play a major part, accounting for nearly 40% of energy-related carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions whilst also having a significant impact on our natural habitats. For everyone working in the design and construction industry, meeting the needs of our society without breaching the earth’s ecological boundaries will demand a paradigm shift in our behaviour. Together with our clients, we will need to commission and design spaces within buildings as indivisible components of a larger, constantly regenerating and self-sustaining system. The research and technology exist for us to begin that transformation now, but what has been lacking is collective will. Recognising this, we are committing to strengthen our working practices to design spaces with a more positive impact on the world around us.

Sharing some photos from a great panel at the Workspace Design Show London this past month! It was a pleasure to speak alongside my fellow Interior Design Declares - UK Design Declares members, Cat Hoad, Helen Gordon, and Mathew Freeman in a thought mindful discussion around Circularity and Social Value. Our conversation delved into social and ethical supply chains, circularity, and, most importantly, how collaboration can drive real, impactful solutions. A great example was our partnership between MCM and Nested Living Ltd for office fully dismantlable walls. . Once again, the WDS event was fantastic, and we had a lovely biophilic stage design by Umbrella Furniture, giving me Mediterranean vibes! A huge thank you to Workspace Design Show London, Esha Bark-Jones, and Charlie Bark-Jones for the invite. MCM

It’s been a busy couple of weeks attending various trade fairs. Last week, I had the privilege of joining a panel at the Workplace Design Show alongside my fellow Interior Design Declares - UK steering group members, Ana Rita Martins and Cat Hoad, with the discussion expertly moderated by Mathew Freeman. Our conversation focused on ESG, social impact, and longevity in design. Key takeaways included: - The urgent need for the industry to move beyond a ‘do less harm’ sustainability mindset to embrace regenerative approaches—designing spaces that actively enhance the health and wellbeing of all life rather than just a tick-box exercise for energy efficiency. - where adopting a living systems perspective placing life at the centre of decision-making to drive meaningful and lasting change. - Embedding circular economy principles—designing out waste, prioritising disassembly and repurposability, improving energy efficiency, and reducing airborne toxins through sustainable material choices. - Leveraging case studies to inspire and demonstrate what’s possible. - The power of collaboration early on with key stakeholders to unlock transformative outcomes and drive greater returns on investment. It was a refreshing and much-needed conversation—one that moved beyond surface-level sustainability talk and into the heart of what truly matters: designing for the flourishing of people, places, and the planet. The collective energy and willingness to push for meaningful change was inspiring, reinforcing the vital role of moving to regenerative thinking in shaping the future of workplace design.
