Founder and MD at YRS TRULY, a very cool (and nice) multi-award-winning gaming marketing agency. UK Agency Awards Independent Agency of the Year 2023.
Into Games created the UK's first report on social mobility in the games industry. We're proud to have helped bring it to life as one of the sponsors. Here's what you'll find inside: 🟡 Games development has one of the worst records of socioeconomic access of any creative or technical sector. 🟡 It could be up to 5 times harder for someone to get hired in the sector if they come from working class backgrounds. 🟡 Graduate hiring figures from universities directly into the games sector could be as low as 5.5%. They may even be far lower, factoring in alumni competition for roles magnifying socioeconomic disadvantage. This has a severe impact on the industry: our creativity, our talent, our ideas. The team at Into Games are doing vital work (thank you, Declan Cassidy and Brandon Cole!), but they can't fix the industry's social mobility problem without your help and commitment to act. We've completed our report on Social Mobility in the UK Games Sector (after 8+ months of work)! 👀 The report looks at seven key areas of disadvantage and provides key recommendations for each, based on our own data and over 150 referenced reports and research. Here are some of our findings... 🔎 34.7% of the UK population is working class, yet the proportion of people with such a background in games is 13% 🔎 There are no advocacy groups or major bursary funding pots available for those from under-resourced backgrounds who want games careers, meaning that there is essentially zero support for these groups outside of existing HE support, which is highly variable. 🔎 59% of people working in games from these backgrounds have felt 'othered' by their peers in the workplace. This could be comments about their accent or being left out of group cultural norms. Download here (for free) 👉 https://lnkd.in/eZv9S4QY We truly appreciate and thank you for your support - let's continue to make a difference 💖 Let us know your thoughts in the comments below! #SocialMobilityInGames #DifficultyLevelReport #GamesIndustry #AccessToGamesCareers #IntoGames #UKGamesIndustry

This has been a long time in the making. After a whole heap of data gathering (keep your eyes peeled folks!!) and *many* conversations with developers from underrepresented backgrounds - we realised there's a market failure in getting projects funded for diverse-led indie devs. Hopefully, we can contribute to the industry's effort to change this. Firstly, huge congratulations to Games London & Michael French, for their incredible project too - everyone should be following the awesome work they're doing for under-represented developers! Shout out to OKRE (Iain Dodgeon looking at you!!), Ukie (Nick Poole OBE & Nick Button-Brown!) plus the amazing folks at Into Games (Declan Cassidy, and Colin Macdonald) for their projects and the inspiring work they're all doing for the games industry. Finally, a huge thank you to the British Film Institute (BFI) & the The National Lottery (Anna Mansi, Anna Casey & Chris Filip!) for making this all happen. All of us at Code Coven are so excited to collaborate and to create change in the UK games industry 🎮
✨ Aurora Overhead✨ We’re thrilled to announce that Code Coven has been awarded funding from the BFI National Lottery to support a new initiative that will help bridge the funding gap for underrepresented game developers. We're incredibly grateful for this opportunity and excited to partner with British Film Institute (BFI) to make a positive impact on the UK games industry. We’ll reveal more details about Code Coven’s Aurora Agency on our YouTube channel on December 5th at 5PM GMT. Watch to learn if your studio qualifies and to express early interest! In the meantime, let us know your biggest funding challenges below!
