Breaking news! Top Boy star Ashley Walters’ directorial debut Animol has been announced. The #BFIBacked feature promises to be a raw, coming-of-age prison drama. Written by Nick Love, it will star newcomers Tut Nyuot and Vladyslav Baliuk and will also feature actor Stephen Graham. From Joi Productions, Animol sees Sky and Film4 collaborating for the first time as co-financiers, with the BFI (awarding National Lottery funding) also financing. Bankside Films are handling international sales for the film.

This year’s BFI Flare: London LGBTQIA+ Film Festival Opening Night film will be the International Premiere of The Wedding Banquet. Andrew Ahn’s fresh reimagining of Ang Lee’s award-winning rom-com, starring Bowen Yang, Lily Gladstone, Kelly Marie Tran, Han Gi-Chan, Joan Chen and Youn Yuh-Jung, will screen at BFI Southbank on Wed 19 Mar.

Great to see the recently announced line-up from SXSW includes writer-director Thea Gajic's feature debut, Surviving Earth. The film is based on a true story about a talented harmonica player who arrived in the UK in the 1990s after fleeing the conflict in Yugoslavia. Vlad, now living in Bristol and working as a counsellor, has brought his roots and love for Balkan music to the city by forming a band with his friends from work. #BFIBacked Surviving Earth will have its world premiere at this year's festival taking place in Austin this March. #NationalLottery
