Structural glazing directly bonds glass to the building’s framework, creating a seamless facade that can support some structural load. Curtain glazing, in contrast, uses a metal framework to hold glass panels without carrying weight, perfect for high-rise and commercial designs. Which approach suits your project? Glazing interlayers are essential for laminated glass, offering enhanced strength, security and noise reduction. Here's a quick guide to the types and benefits of glazing interlayers. So what is a Glazing Interlayer? - Joins multiple glass panes to form laminated glass - Improves acoustic performance, security, and structural strength - Commonly used in structural glass floors, frameless balustrades, doors, and windows Why Use a Glazing Interlayer? - UV Protection: Shields interiors from UV damage, perfect for glass roofs and facades. - Increased Strength: Reinforces glass, essential for balustrades and floors. - Noise Reduction: Reduces external noise, ideal for projects near high-traffic areas. Types of Glazing Interlayers: Polyvinyl Butyral (PVB) - Cost-effective: Affordable and versatile - Strength: Adequate for many applications - Acoustic Performance: Helps with noise reduction SentryGlas (SGP) - Superior Strength: 5x stronger and 100x more rigid than PVB - Durability: Maintains integrity after glass breakage - Security: Ideal for high-traffic or critical areas like balustrades Benefits of SGP Interlayers: - High Tear Strength: 50 MJ/m3 vs. 10-15 MJ/m3 for PVB - Post-Breakage Support: Can hold significant weight after fracture - Applications: Perfect for frameless balustrades and glass floors Want us to look after your project? Specialist Glazing for Marylebone Lane Hotel IQ Projects is proud to be on-site at the new Marylebone Lane Hotel, a central London development transforming a former car park into a luxury 197-room hotel. Located between Marylebone and Oxford Street, this high-rise hotel features ground-floor restaurants, bars and a rooftop bar with a pool terrace. Collaborating with EPR Architects, we provided a bespoke glazing package that enhances the hotel's modern aesthetic while respecting the character of the surrounding area. One of the key features of this project is the Sieger Super Lux bi-folding doors. These bi-folds were selected for their elevated performance, including the ability to withstand high wind loads, making them ideal for commercial applications. The bespoke powder-coated aluminium frames were finished in a sand/mustard RAL colour, complementing the building’s luxury design and the sculptural gold entrance. Low iron glass was used throughout the glazing package, offering unparalleled clarity and light transmission, ensuring that the hotel's interiors are filled with natural light while maintaining an elegant, transparent aesthetic. Architectural Glazing Options for Museums When specifying architectural glazing for museums, it's essential to focus on both the user experience and the building’s performance. Museums are large public spaces with high-traffic areas, and their glazing needs often include transitional spaces, roof glazing, and protective encasements for priceless artwork. The glazing serves not only to protect from dust, UV radiation and physical impact but also to enhance the architectural design of the museum. For example, at the Geffrye Museum, minimally framed glass doors will open onto the gardens, while frameless glass partitions will divide internal spaces to create light-filled galleries. At Somerset House, IQ Projects designed frameless horizontal glass partitions to allow light to travel between floors while reducing sound transmission. Oversized glazing, as used at The Story of Gardening Museum, complements natural surroundings while maintaining a clean, uninterrupted aesthetic. Similarly, at the River and Rowing Museum in Henley, slim-frame aluminium casement windows were installed to maximise natural light with minimal disruption to views, while adhering to the museum's modern design. Building regulations, such as Approved Document K, ensure that glazing in public spaces includes necessary safety features, such as glass manifestations. When protecting artwork or installations, specialist glazing may be required to meet Arts Council guidelines for UV protection and security. Would you like us to look after your project?
