Yesterday’s budget announcement marks a significant moment for the NHS, with a much-needed £22.6 bn boost. The additional funding will of course be very welcome across the system but hopefully the impact of the budget will go beyond just the financial. For months, much of the NHS leadership has been struggling with a lack of clarity over where to focus their efforts. Hopefully this budget marks a meaningful reset moment for the NHS and short term thinking can be replaced with well considered strategic changes. The technology to transform the NHS into a dramatically more efficient machine exists today, lets step forward confidently and make the ramped up national tax bill make a real difference.

🍁Autumn Budget 2024: a budget to "fix the foundations and deliver change".💼 Today marked the release of one of the most anticipated budgets in recent history (Labour’s first in over 14 years) delivered by Rachel Reeves, the UK’s first female Chancellor of the Exchequer. In her speech, the Chancellor said that the public services are “on their knees” with a £22bn deficit exposed in July, leading to a "difficult decision" to increase taxes by £40bn. WHAT IT MEANS FOR THE NHS, THE KEY TAKEAWAYS: Reeves referred to the findings from the Darzi report: the NHS waiting lists are “record high”, hospitals don’t have the equipment they need, NHS buildings are in a state of disrepair, and over 350,000 people a year are waiting for mental health support. She also emphasised the importance of moving from analogue to digital, from sickness to prevention, and better integration between acute and community services. Today’s budget seeks to stabilise public services and the economy, enabling the NHS “the most cherished public service of all” to better meet today’s demands. Reeves praised the NHS staff for doing a “remarkable job” and announced a £22.6bn increase in the "day-to-day health budget" and a £3.1bn increase in the capital budget, the largest increase in spending outside of Covid since 2010. Reeves said that “the NHS needs to be there when it’s needed”. In addition: 🔸£1.3bn boost for local governments, including social care 🔸1.5% growth in real terms for day-to-day public services spending 🔸New target to reduce NHS waiting lists to no more than 18 weeks 🔸£11.8bn to compensate those “infected and affected” by the infected blood scandal 🔸£1.5bn pledged for new hospital beds 🔸2% productivity healthcare growth target for next year In this budget, there was a clear emphasis on using technology as a key enabler of public service reform to improve the efficiency of public services, making them more accessible and responsive. For meaningful and lasting impact, we hope that the NHS leadership will embrace a new mindset, one that is essential for driving sustainable, transformative change. At Isla, we have seen firsthand the huge impact that ambitious implementation of the right technologies can have on patients, staff, and the system as a whole; from Teledermatology referral pathways through to Community surveillance pathways. This budget is a very welcome change from the austerity that we have seen for the last decade and sets our NHS on a new trajectory of change. #autumnbudget #reeves #NHS
