About us

ITOPF has responded to more than 800 incidents involving oil or chemical spills worldwide. Our highly skilled international team is ready to assist 24 hours a day, 365 days a year to provide impartial technical advice. As a not-for-profit organisation, we have devoted efforts to developing a wide range of technical services to promote effective response in the marine environment to back up our core role of responding to ship-sourced spills. The five key services that we offer are spill response, claims analysis & damage assessment, contingency planning, training and information. Our services are provided to our Members (tanker owners) or Associates (other shipowners) and their oil pollution insurers (normally one of the P&I Clubs), and we offer also our services at the request of governments and intergovernmental organisations such as the International Oil Pollution Compensation Funds (IOPC Funds). Our London and Singapore based team of whom are available to respond to spills, combined with over 45 years’ experience, is what makes us truly unique.

As part of the GI WACAF initiative in Sierra Leone, ITOPF joined the International Maritime Organization, Ipieca, independent consultants, and the Sierra Leone Maritime Administration - SLMARAD for a shoreline pollution clean-up workshop held in Freetown. Dr Conor Bolas represented ITOPF and delivered several presentations to delegates during the week-long event, covering advice on how best to approach clean-up operations in specific shoreline environments. This included how to utilise Net Environmental Benefit Analysis (NEBA) to help determine which equipment and techniques to use. He gave further talks on the properties and behaviour of oil when spilled in the environment, as well as an introduction to ITOPF, the services we provide, and how to access them. The workshop also involved a practical element with equipment demonstrations and training on shoreline survey techniques. #GIWACAF #SierraLeone #pollutionresponse

We travelled to Seattle, USA to connect with the Office of Response and Restoration (OR&R) team at NOAA: National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration for a week-long event of knowledge sharing, introductions to new team members and to identify areas for future collaboration. Throughout the week both organisations delivered talks on mutual interests relating to oil and chemical pollution response, as well as demonstrating the suite of technologies we both use in this shared endeavour. A litany of topics relevant to the maritime industry were covered including oil trajectory modelling, spills of Hazardous Noxious Substances (HNS) and the incorporation of environmental, social and governances (ESG) into spill response. We demonstrated our Virtual and Mixed Reality (VR & MR) applications in which users are familiarised with the process of determining how to approach the clean-up of a pollution incident in various environments. The trip was highly valuable to reconnect with an important stakeholder in the pollution incident response space and we cherish the longstanding working relationship with NOAA and its team. #NOAA #pollutionresponse #oil

#methanol is the seventh and final substance in our series of #alternativefuels reports and is considered a promising low-carbon fuel for the shipping industry with its easy storage compared to other alternative fuels.   The industry has more than 100 years of experience with methanol, it is widely used and shipped around the world.   At ambient conditions, methanol is a toxic, colourless, and flammable liquid. When spilled into the marine environment, methanol will float, rapidly spreading on the sea surface and dissolving into the water column while simultaneously undergoing evaporation.   Our report takes a look at its storage, use as a fuel and potential hazards below and on our website 👉 https://lnkd.in/euhSP_Zd #cleanenergy #marineenergy #pollution

We were delighted to welcome Solis Marine to our offices yesterday. The team, comprising Ros Blazejczyk, Captain Jamie Simpson, Alvin Forster and Simon Hindley (online), provided a fascinating insight into their role in casualty management and gave us a timely and informative presentation on ship design considerations for alternative fuels. The session provided an excellent opportunity to raise awareness of some key issues related to salvage and incident investigations, and helped strengthen relations between our two organisations.

#LPG or Liquefied Petroleum Gas features as the sixth fuel in our #alternativefuels series and is considered a viable alternative fuel in shipping’s race to zero-emissions. The specific composition of LPG varies but primarily comprises propane with butane, or a mixture of both. It is typically converted into its liquid form for ease of storage and transport. It’s been shipped globally in bulk for more than 80 years and the maritime industry has significant experience in handling and shipping this fuel. If released, LPG will rapidly vaporise, and spread over the ground or water surface. LPG vapour is moderately flammable, with a flammability range of 2.2 – 9.5 (v/v) %.   Our report delves into the damage and liabilities arising from incidents involving LPG and takes a look at clean-up and preventative measures, environmental and property damage, as well as potential economic loss and personal injury.
