Recently, Ed Davies, Chief Information Officer and Kerrie Webb, IT Performance, Business Management and Supplier Lead attended the Marine & Energy Insurtech conference in London- it was a great day! Kerrie remarks that her highlights were Cathrine Hopstock's (Vice President, Head of Technology at Gard AS) keynote - "How Gard have embraced the product model and are driving a digital journey. There's so many similarities in what we've set out to do at West in adopting a proactive model with cross functional product teams.” Ed took part in a panel on legacy inefficiencies and spoke on legacy technology's restrictions, moving from a reactive to proactive technology operating model and also the need to ensure that processes are documented to support future adaption and improvement. One of the other panelists, Alexander Brill (Chief Technology Officer at Den Norske Krigsforsikring for Skib (DNK)) made the statement "as soon as you release code, it's legacy" which was such a succinct way of explaining what legacy tech is and highlighted that technology needs investment (Time/Energy/Staff Engagement/Funding) to keep it current and meeting the needs of our customers. Lars Ola (Product Director at Noria Digital) and Kerrie spoke on compliance. Their key base was that it's about meeting the intention of the regulation and ultimately it's there to protect our business, clients and to manage risk. Kerrie also remarks: "it was so specific (Marine and Energy Tech), it meant everything that was spoken about was relevant to our roles and it was also great to meet people from different clubs. It was a day well spent." #West #MarineInsurance #Technology

The market has seen a rise in engine fire claims over the past year. While some are due to poor-quality engines, human error remains a major factor. On Friday, 21 March, our Global Head of Loss Prevention, Simon Hodgkinson, will be speaking at Marine Insurance London alongside Jacob Damgaard, Divisional Director - Head of Loss Prevention at Britannia P&I Club. In this session, we investigate why this is happening and consider the impact of cutting training budgets. We also consider the risk of downsizing the numbers of crew on board as vessels become more automated. Don't miss out! Sanctions have become the go-to foreign policy tool, and the maritime industry is increasingly in the crosshairs. From Russia to Iran, Venezuela to North Korea, evolving regulations mean shipowners, charterers, and insurers must navigate a complex and ever-changing landscape. At West, we’ve seen firsthand how the compliance burden has grown-tracking vessels, investing in sanctions teams, and helping our Members understand the risks. With regulators using shipping as leverage to enforce sanctions, having a robust compliance strategy is no longer optional.
