ITOPF was delighted to join the National Environment Agency of Singapore for a special ceremony honouring all those who had assisted with clean-up efforts following the MARINE HONOUR oil spill. We were delighted to welcome Solis Marine to our offices yesterday. The team, comprising Ros Blazejczyk, Captain Jamie Simpson, Alvin Forster and Simon Hindley (online), provided a fascinating insight into their role in casualty management and gave us a timely and informative presentation on ship design considerations for alternative fuels. The session provided an excellent opportunity to raise awareness of some key issues related to salvage and incident investigations, and helped strengthen relations between our two organisations. 

#LPG or Liquefied Petroleum Gas features as the sixth fuel in our #alternativefuels series and is considered a viable alternative fuel in shipping’s race to zero-emissions. The specific composition of LPG varies but primarily comprises propane with butane, or a mixture of both. It is typically converted into its liquid form for ease of storage and transport. It’s been shipped globally in bulk for more than 80 years and the maritime industry has significant experience in handling and shipping this fuel. If released, LPG will rapidly vaporise, and spread over the ground or water surface. LPG vapour is moderately flammable, with a flammability range of 2.2 – 9.5 (v/v) %.   Our report delves into the damage and liabilities arising from incidents involving LPG and takes a look at clean-up and preventative measures, environmental and property damage, as well as potential economic loss and personal injury. We spent time in Greece visiting Frontline as part of its Senior Officers Conference. Dr. Amy Jewell and Joe Lane were on hand representing ITOPF, with Amy delivering presentations on the role ITOPF plays in a marine pollution event, including our role on site as well as our work in handling and administering claims arising from a spill. We showcased our Mixed-Reality (MR) application to attendees, where they were placed in a series of different virtual locations and tasked with managing the clean-up efforts following an oil-spill. Participants were making decisions on how and what resources to use based on the location, volume of substance spilled and the environmental conditions present in each virtual scene. #pollutionresponse #oilspill #mixedreality

Our 2025 Research and Development (R&D) award application window is now open. If you need funding for your research project, or PhD, dealing with pollution spill-related subjects, keep on reading. Up to £60,000 is available for short term project funds including research costs, staff costs, overheads, and travel expenses. PhD projects could receive £40,000 for research costs in instalments in addition to a competitive annual stipend (living expenses) and contribution towards tuition fees are payable to the successful candidate each year for the duration of their research (up to 4 years). The award has granted more than £600,000 since its inception to projects aimed at improving the knowledge base of issues related to accidental marine pollution from vessels.
