Global brand defining the essence of British style since 1894.

About us

The Barbour story began in 1894 in South Shields in the North East of England. Founder John Barbour began supplying oilskins and other garments to protect the growing community of sailors, fishermen and dockers. These first weather resistant items quickly established Barbour’s reputation for innovation and quality. Today, Barbour remains a fifth generation family business. Under the leadership of Chairman Dame Margaret Barbour, Barbour has grown into a lifestyle brand sold in over 55 countries worldwide including Europe, the US and Asia offering a wardrobe of stylish functional clothing, footwear and accessories inspired by the unique values of the British countryside. The iconic Barbour Bedale and Barbour Beaufort wax jackets continue to be made by hand in the factory in South Shields. Barbour International, the collection for men and women inspired by Barbour’s motorcycle heritage established in 1936, is now a separate stand alone brand with its own identity. In 2020, Barbour launched Wax for Life, an overarching name for all of Barbour’s wax services designed to encourage customers to extend the life of their wax garments. Wax for Life includes re-waxing and repairs (first introduced in 1921) and Barbour Re-Loved an upcycling circularity initiative. Each year over 70,000 wax garments are sent back to Barbour globally to be repaired, rewaxed or altered.

  • STEP UP FOR SMART WORKS 👟🏅 This month our HR team has taken on the challenge of walking 10,000 steps every day in support of #StepUpforSmartWorks and supporting the Smart Works Newcastle Centre. Smart Works is a charity that we work very closely with; it empowers unemployed women into work through high quality interview clothing and coaching. By walking 10,000 steps each day throughout the month, we aim to raise awareness and funds for this incredible cause. Every step counts towards helping women build confidence and take the next step toward a brighter future. If you'd like to support our efforts and contribute to Smart Works, below is our fundraising page and we would be so grateful for your donation! Every little bit makes a difference. 🙏 https://lnkd.in/enRWtMJr

💜Celebrating International Women’s Day 💜 Yesterday, we joined in on the global celebrations of women’s achievements for #InternationalWomensDay with an exciting event hosted by our Inclusion Network. The event consisted of three incredible guest speakers in line with this year’s theme of Accelerating Action: 💜Charlie from Women’s Street Watch Newcastle, a dedicated volunteering group, with the mission of working to ensure the safety and well-being of women in the night-time economy by patrolling the streets and providing safety and support where needed. 💜Kathryn from Smart Works Newcastle charity, who empower and help women in the North East get back into the workplace. 💜Katherine Richards from our Legal team, who participates in the ultramarathon “Marathon Des Sables”, to highlight the importance of breaking mental barriers and doing anything that you put your mind too. We would like to say a massive well done to all involved, and to our Inclusion Network, for organising the event, along with a tasty desk drop!

#NationalCareersWeek As part of our Learning & Development curriculum, we’ve recently partnered with training provider TMS Development International Ltd (TMSDI) to help our teams identify personal preferences and core strengths to position themselves for success in the workplace. Last week, our Customer Services team participated in a TMSDI session, utilising the framework to not only understand how they can achieve individual success, but to combine the results to give deeper insight into the spread of preferences across the team and help achieve stronger team work. It’s great to see our teams engaging in this collaborative approach to enhance their careers. #NCW2025
