Lining up the priorities of doctors and researchers with the needs of patients and families can be a difficult task. Murdoch Children's Research Institute's (MCRI) Associate Professor Rachel Conyers is leading a new partnership and survey, centred around the journey of young cancer and blood disorder patients who undergo bone marrow transplants in Australia and overseas. The survey, which follows the principles of the James Lind Alliance, will ensure that the voices of clinicians, doctors, researchers and families with a lived experience can all be heard equally. “Research on the effects of treatments often overlook the shared interests of patients, carers and clinicians...questions that they consider important are not addressed equally and many areas of potentially important research are neglected," Associate Professor Conyers said. “Following the James Lind Alliance method will help us to ensure that those who fund health research are aware of what really matters to families. Uncovering these key priorities will enhance and improve the delivery of bone marrow transplants in children and improve patient’s quality of life.” To take the survey or to find out more 👉 https://direc.to/mm_P #MCRI #MedicalResearch #Cancer #Oncology #Transplant #BloodCancer Rachel C. Did you know… The James Lind Alliance (JLA) is named after a pioneer of clinical trials? In the 1700s, there were many conflicting ideas about how to treat the deadly disease scurvy. James Lind, a Scottish naval surgeon, decided to confront this uncertainty by treating his patients within a clinical trial comparing the proposed remedies. To do this, he allocated two sailors to each of six different treatments for a period of 14 days. His trial showed that oranges and lemons were dramatically better than the other supposed treatments! Today, by bringing together patients, carers and clinicians, JLA PSPs identify and prioritise evidence uncertainties of their own. Happy birthday James Lind!
