  • 🌍✨ Meet Mozambique the Gorilla, the Newest Member of JGI’s Tchimpounga Sanctuary 🦍✨ We’re thrilled to share the inspiring rescue story of an infant gorilla, found in and named for Mozambique, who was saved from the illegal wildlife trade through the swift coordination of various government agencies. The Mozambique Wildlife Alliance (MWA) and law enforcement officials worked tirelessly to ensure her safety, confiscating and processing crucial permits for her transport from Mozambique through Angola to the Jane Goodall Institute’s Tchimpounga sanctuary in the Republic of the Congo. 🇲🇿🇦🇴🇨🇬 👩⚕️ Dr. Rebeca Atencia, JGI Republic of the Congo’s Executive Director and Head Veterinarian of Tchimpounga, with support from the Pan African Sanctuary Alliance, teamed up with MWA’s Dr. Isabel Almeida to stabilize Mozambique (also nicknamed “ZZ”) and prepare her for her new home. ❤️ Antoinette, a long-time caregiver at Tchimpounga, graciously came out of retirement to be ZZ’s human “mother.” With her expert care, ZZ’s quarantine period has progressed beautifully. She is now stable, eating well, and showing great signs of energy and a light-hearted personality. 🌱 Infant gorillas need incredibly sensitive care, especially in their early years. ZZ will be under the expert care of Tchimpounga staff for the next two years before she joins other gorillas at another facility. This specialized care ensures she grows up healthy and strong. --- We extend our heartfelt thanks to the Mozambique Wildlife Alliance, the Government of Mozambique (National Administration of Conservation Areas), the Government of the Republic of the Congo (Ministry of Forest Economy), the Government of Angola (Ministry of Environment, CITES Authority, & National Institute for Biodiversity Conservation), TAAG-Linhas Aereas de Angola, Fundação Kissama, Fondation Brigitte Bardot, Ivan Carter Wildlife Alliance, Pan African Sanctuary Alliance (PASA), JGI Republic of the Congo & The Jane Goodall Institute USA. Together, we can inspire hope through action! 💚 Photos by Fernando Turmo, Rebeca Atencia, and Heather Anne Vanek. Dr. Goodall and the Jane Goodall Institute do not endorse handling or close proximity to wildlife. • In response to the arrest of Captain Paul Watson, Dr. Jane Goodall and the members of the Jane Goodall Institute’s Cetacean and Ethics Committees have issued the following statement calling for his immediate release. Dr. Jane Goodall and members of the Jane Goodall Institute’s Cetacean and Ethics Committees urgently call for the Danish government to immediately release Captain Paul Watson and deny requests from the Japanese government to extradite him. We understand that Captain Watson was arrested on charges related to his opposition to a Japanese whaling ship operating in the North Pacific. Dr. Goodall and members of the Jane Goodall Institute’s Cetacean and Ethics Committees unequivocally condemn the practice of whaling and are strongly opposed to arresting individuals demonstrating their compassion and concern for the wellbeing, conservation and protection of cetaceans and individuals of those species. Whales (and other cetaceans) are long lived sentient beings. They have complex social bonds and are extremely intelligent. Whaling, whether for commercial or alleged scientific purposes, is cruel and unethical. Each and every whale matters as an individual and should be respected accordingly. Captain Watson is simply taking action to try to prevent the inhumane practice of killing whales, which most countries have banned decades ago. In so doing he is expressing the anger of thousands of people in many countries who absolutely support his moral courage in not only speaking out on behalf of the whales, but taking action. Yours sincerely, Dr. Jane Goodall and members of the Jane Goodall Institute’s Cetacean and Ethics Committees: Dr. Jane Goodall (DBE, Founder – the Jane Goodall Institute & UN Messenger of Peace), Prof. Dr. Marc Bekoff (zoologist, University of Colorado Boulder, USA), Dr. Kerry Bowman (ethicist, University of Toronto, Canada), Chris Heyde (founder and CEO, Blue Marble Strategy, USA), Melody Horrill (journalist and author/animal advocate, Australia), Dr. Soojin Jang (marine mammal scientist, Marine Animal Research and Conservation, Korea), Dr. Koen Margodt (ethicist, the Jane Goodall Institute Global/Ghent University, Belgium), Dr. Lori Marino (marine mammal scientist, founder and president, Whale Sanctuary Project, USA), Mary Peng (founder and CEO, International Center for Veterinary Services, the People’s Republic of China), Dr. Rick Quinn (veterinarian, Canada), Charles Vinick (executive director, Whale Sanctuary Project, USA), Dr. Ingrid Visser (marine mammal scientist, Orca Research Trust, New Zealand) and Sarah Wertkin (anthrozoology, the Jane Goodall Institute, Canada). JGI contributes to UN Convention against Transnational Organized Crime (UNTOC) Review Mechanism   Zara Bending reports back on JGI's first engagement with the UNTOC’s Review Mechanism.   Our followers are likely accustomed to seeing Dr Goodall and the Jane Goodall Institute (JGI) participating in United Nations forums and activities including the UN Environment Programme, International Day of Peace, and CoPs for a range of treaties such as those concerning climate change, biodiversity, and wildlife trade. But, with wildlife trafficking now constituting an increasingly prevalent and serious challenge requiring an international response, the Institute has expanded its scope of interest to include international agreements targeting organized crime and corruption. “Wildlife trafficking threatens species survival, damages eco-system health, poses significant health risks to humans, and causes intense suffering to individual animals. The presence of organized crime, cycles of violence, corruption, and the fraud that facilitate these crimes threaten good governance, the rule of law, and sustainable development more broadly.” -Extract from the JGI’s written contribution On the 7th of June, the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) held its  Joint Constructive Dialogue on Technical Assistance and International Cooperation, featuring panels on crimes that affect the environment, organized fraud, and the role of technology on international cooperation. Following the live session, we submitted a written contribution to the UNODC which has since been accepted and published. • JGI renews its global approach to fighting wildlife trafficking Thanks to our ForeverWild team and JGI’s global experts, we’ve recently updated our Anti-Wildlife Trafficking Policy to incorporate the latest evidence, recommendations, international agreements and our own approach. Today on International Day of Biodiversity 2024, we’re proud to share our policy. Wildlife trafficking is a huge threat to biodiversity; in some places it’s what’s most threatening chimpanzees and other primates. See how our work is #partoftheplan to protect, conserve and boost biodiversity for future generations. #4EverWild #endwildlifecrime #BiodiversityDay #ForNature https://lnkd.in/eG7ewJbq

  • How do we ensure that in our wish to get closer to nature and appreciate wildlife, we do good, rather than harm? We at the Jane Goodall Institute support conservation tourism, which protects wildlife, boosts conservation and benefits local communities. We encourage everyone to follow the guidance of experts which is now available to ensure that primate watching always supports primate protection and conservation, with specific guidance available for different circumstances, including for watching great apes. Our new JGI Global Wildlife Tourism Policy sets out our approach. Whilst identifying how tourism can bring benefits to wildlife and communities, we also highlight the damaging effects of some tourism like trophy hunting. The 'Jane’ children's television series is a partnership with Apple TV+ and Sinking Ship Entertainment and first launched in April 2023. The second series will air from 19 April 2024. The highly-anticipated season two of Emmy Award-winning “Jane” launches globally, Friday April 19th on Apple TV+. This mission-driven series for kids and families is inspired by the work of world-renowned ethologist and conservationist, Dr. Jane Goodall, DBE, founder of the Jane Goodall Institute and a United Nations Messenger of Peace.  The show is a live-action/CGI blended series based on the story of Jane Garcia (Ava Louise Murchison), a nine-year-old budding environmentalist on a quest to save endangered animals with friends David (Mason Blomberg) and Greybeard the chimpanzee. Using her powerful imagination, Jane and her friends embark on epic adventures to help protect wild animals all around the world because, according to her idol Dr. Jane Goodall: “Only if we understand, will we care. Only if we care, will we help. Only if we help, can they be saved.” In Season 2, Jane Garcia and her friends embark on new adventures on her mission to save the world, one endangered animal at a time. Inspired by the mission of Dr. Jane Goodall. On the series, Dr. Jane Goodall states: “I’m excited about this opportunity and relationship with Apple and Sinking Ship. The program ‘Jane’ spreads a message of hope and reminds children that the environment is something that we all have to be concerned about while also inspiring them and their parents to make a difference.” This show was made possible through the work of Emmy award-winning J.J Johnson (from Sinking Ship Entertainment), and colleagues from across our global network, led by Andria Teather from JGI Global. Dr Jane Goodall, Melody Horrill and I wrote an open letter to the Members of the Flemish Parliament, asking to send the last dolphins from a dolphinarium near Bruges to a seaside sanctuary in Greece.
