Building a fairer UK justice system within everyone’s reach.

About us

JUSTICE is a cross-party law reform charity working to build a fairer UK justice system within everyone’s reach. Over our 67-year history we have transformed the legal landscape for the better, led by evidence, expertise, and a focus on practical solutions. We are the only non-governmental organisation (‘NGO’) whose work spans the whole of the UK justice system - from family and housing law to policing, benefits decision making, and much more – touching the lives of people across the country. Key legal bodies we now take for granted such as the Ombudsman, the Crown Prosecution Service, and the Criminal Injuries Compensation Board were all proposed and supported into being by JUSTICE. JUSTICE is a membership organisation with members from students to senior judges.

Last night, JUSTICE gathered in the House of Commons to celebrate the launch of our Law for Lawmakers guide. It was fantastic to be joined by so many MPs, Peers, and key voices from the legal and civic space, to discuss how this guide can empower lawmakers to act as custodians of our democracy and the rule of law. Speeches were commenced by the brilliant Lord Neuberger - our gracious host for the evening - and Andrew Denny of A&O Shearman, whose generous support made this guide, as well as last night’s event, possible.  It was then fascinating to hear from both the Attorney General (The Rt Hon. Lord Hermer KC) and Solicitor General Sarah Sackman, followed by Former Lord Chancellor Alex Chalk KC, who emphasised how protecting the rule of law is a truly bipartisan issue. Speeches were wrapped up with appearances from Josh Babarinde OBE CF MP, and Tom Rutland, who shared their perspectives as Parliamentarians, and discussed what an important resource the Law for Lawmakers guide is for them. A huge thank you to our brilliant speakers, to the Commons for hosting us, and to A&O Shearman and the Joseph Rowntree Foundation (JRF) for their assistance in bringing this report together.

Our Deputy Legal Director, Tyrone Steele, joined Baroness Chakrabarti for a fantastic discussion on her new book ‘Human Rights: The Case of Defence’, at the Labour Party Conference in Liverpool this week. Alongside Silkie Carlo, Zoe B., Rhea Wolfson, and the Attorney General, they discussed all things human rights – exploring the key threats, challenges, and opportunities that will define the space in the years to come, as well as the ever-important need for greater protections and the rule of law. A key theme which emerged was the need for greater public awareness and ownership of human rights and the justice system, which should serve to safeguard communities across the country.

"Our broken prison system wrecks lives, boosts crime, and costs vast sums of public money. To properly solve this crisis, the government must use the upcoming budget as an opportunity to build back vital basics such as the probation service, mental health care, and youth centres, to give people real routes away from offending" Our Deputy Legal Director Tyrone Steele talks to the Big Issue about how to solve the ongoing crisis in our prisons. What does effective regulation of AI in the UK look like? This was a core question underpinning last night’s panel discussion on the future of AI regulation in the UK. It was fascinating to hear our panellists Tim Clement-Jones, Dr. Susie A., Brittany Smith and Sophia Adams bhatti delve deep into this topic - exploring how clear, fair and proportionate regulation can support innovation, the role human rights and equality laws should play, and how UK regulation sits alongside international standards. Their depth of experience, combined with their diverse range of perspectives, made for a spirited and nuanced discussion – expertly moderated by HSF’s James Wood. Ultimately, our panellists agreed that that the key policy questions to inform the regulation of AI are ones for society at large. We need to be asking: what do we want AI to do for us and what trade offs do we want to make when regulating it? A huge thank you Herbert Smith Freehills, to Lara Nassif and the rest of the HSF team for hosting and organising the panel, and of course to James and our fantastic panellists for their work on bringing this conversation to life.
