Double success for Kanda in Westminster!   Earlier this month, two schemes which Kanda were supporting at 1-4 Eaton Mews West and 1 Victoria Street were granted planning permission in Westminster.   The committee strongly commended the public consultation on 1-4 Eaton Mews West, which Kanda led on behalf of Leconfield Property Group, which will deliver six new Mews houses and workspaces. The engagement approach was highlighted as “exemplary” in securing the support of neighbours and representative groups of the area to back the redevelopment on the site of a departing garage operation. A rare example of a brownfield site in the borough! It was great to be part of the project team with DP9 Limited and MSMR Architects   Kanda also led the successful public consultation and engagement for the redevelopment of 1 Victoria Street which will provide a new sustainable, commercial building, offering high-quality office accommodation, with active retail and affordable workspace. Working for Mitsubishi Estate Co., Ltd. in a team led by Stanhope PLC, Gerald Eve, and Allford Hall Monaghan Morris, the consent will see the removal and replacement of a 1960s former government building at one of the most sensitive sites in the borough, adjacent to the Westminster Abbey World Heritage Site, neighbouring Peabody Estate and Church House. The team’s work with the nearby The Abbey Centre to drive and develop social value through the planning process was also highly commended.   A big well done to the Kanda team Simon Gartshore, Jessica Singh and Eleanor Monk   To find out more about what we do, visit our website: https://lnkd.in/g3cHzdwy https://lnkd.in/g3cHzdwy

Earlier this week, Britney Truong, Daisy Kendrick and Jasmine Ruhiu attended the NLA debate on ‘Housing Londoners- Should we build up or out?’, chaired by Jay Morton, Director of Bell Phillips Architects. Some really interesting perspectives put forward for both sides of the debate: 🌆 Arguments for ‘building up’ were centred around retrofitting existing tall buildings, unlocking more homes in central locations connected to economic zones and transport, and the positive changes in attitude seen towards living in high rises due to the increase in build-to-rent (BTR) developments. 🏠 Arguments for ‘building out’ focused on the existing backlog of 4.5 million houses needed, with a necessity to build faster, quicker, and at scale. With London’s infrastructure already under strain, new developments and the government’s New Towns will support expeditious and more sustainable growth in outer London. Attendees were fairly spread on the issue following the discussion, while recognising there is in fact an incredible amount of nuance and, in reality, it isn’t a ‘one or the other’ but a likely combination of the two that is going to generate the number of new homes London needs. A fascinating discussion that we were thrilled to attend.

Was great to have Kanda represented by Mark Harrison at the BusinessLDN Briefing this morning with Caroline Woodley, Mayor of the London Borough of Hackney – hosted by Openreach with breathtaking views from the top of the BT Tower (pictured, looking towards Hackney). Good to hear about opportunities in Shoreditch, Hackney Wick and Hackney Central, and how Hackney’s leadership are open to new models that could deliver more affordable housing for young people.

With the government’s #NPPF changes currently out for public consultation, it was great to have the Kanda team represented by Jo Dancy nee Sistern and Karen Alcock at the Planning Reforms and NPPF briefing hosted by DP9 Limited last night. Plenty of interesting discussion and questions around the mechanisms, process, and capacity for delivery. Thank you to DP9 Limited for hosting such a fantastic event!

Insightful evening last night at the #DP9 and #LandmarkChambers event with Zack Simons - discussing all things NPPF and planning reform - raising a number of interesting Qs: Q - With mandatory housing targets sky-rocketing in the regions, requiring many Local Plans to be re-written, how will struggling LPA resources cope? Q - Will grey belt development end up being less viable than brownfield due to golden rule demands for social/ green infrastructure & affordable housing? Q - What process/ mechanism will be used to bring forward New Towns to avoid NIMBYism and local objections - NSIPs or some other? Q - What will planning committee reform look like if more applications never make it to committee & are determined through delegated powers? Q - Can 'at least' 10,000 homes in New Towns be clustered developments? Q - Private sector is already engaged in Task Force discussions - but how will collaboration with local authorities work? Q - Does the NPPF go far enough to support non-resi to deliver on Labour aspirations of economic growth and infrastructure to support housing? #LandmarkChambers #DP9 #KandaConsulting #KandaLondon #KandaRegions #KandaInsights #KandaStrategicCommunications

Isabelle Price and Mark Harrison were delighted to join Southwark Council and representatives of dozens of councils across England for the launch of Securing the Future of Council Housing. The report is a realistic roadmap for stabilising council housing finances, backed by 106 councils, that will give councils the certainty they need to enable them to make a significant contribution to the Government’s ambitious house-building targets. It was great to hear Cllr Kieron Williams, Leader of Southwark Council, and Cllr Sharon Thompson, JP, Deputy Leader of Birmingham City Council, explain how the recommendations would help unlock the capacity of councils to deliver the new council homes that are so desperately needed.

Off the back of 50 Baker Street being recently approved, one of the most significant demolition schemes approved by Westminster City Council since Labour gained control in May 2022, Simon Gartshore discusses further why good consultation matters, and how in this case it led to getting approval for a full redevelopment in a retrofit-first borough.
