Making renewable energy more profitable through operational data.

I recently spoke with Teemu Vekkeli from Eurus Energy Europe BV on our #RideTheWildWind podcast and asked him what is the most underutilized source of data within the wind industry. See the short clip to find out his answer. What data do YOU think we can leverage more to make #WindEnergyMoreProfitable?

What lessons has the wind industry learned in th last 15-20 years? A while back I had the opportunity to join the first ever episode of Ride the Wild Wind podcast with Bora Tokyay to discuss some challenges and opportunities wind energy is facing today. From project development to operations and asset management, we explored the critical intersection of technical expertise, commercial strategy, and long-term value creation. Key topics we covered: 🔹 Real-world expertise in early-stage development – How practical knowledge drives better commercial outcomes. 🔹 Balancing operational excellence with long-term asset value – Lessons learned from the field. 🔹 The overlooked data points in wind operations & asset management – What truly matters for informed decision-making. 🔹 Unique challenges for wind energy – Ensuring technical insights translate into stronger contracts and commercial decisions. 🔹 Advice for the next generation of engineers and asset managers – The real-world challenges newcomers should focus on mastering first. 🔹 …and a take on what I like least about the industry. In case this discussion resonates with you, I’d love to hear your thoughts—what do you see as the biggest gap between technical expertise and commercial success in our industry? Listen to the full episode from the link in the comments. Big thanks to Bora and the Kavaken team for the conversation! #WindEnergy #RenewableEnergy #AssetManagement #OperationsManagement #Leadership

Making renewable energy more profitable through operational data.

This week in Essen, I had the opportunity to join 3 other innovators to talk about #offshorewind as part of a session organized by World Energy Council - Germany at the E-world energy & water conference. Some key points from the session were: - Offshore wind is a major component of the energy transition - Profitability of the industry is being questioned as recent increase in financing costs resulted in project delays/cancellations - Opex is a bigger component of the LCoE, as Capex have come down significantly (for bottom-fixed) - Innovation around hardware and software to reduce Opex has the potential to reverse the recent negative sentiment by boosting profitability While I focused on the use of data, the other innovations included unmanned subsea inspections by Tethys Robotics, nearly noise-less piling by GBM Works and scalable grid solutions by IONATE. All pretty cool. Check them out.

🎙️ Introducing “Ride the Wild Wind” – A podcast on making wind energy more profitable! (yes, it’s named after the Queen song) The wind energy industry moves fast and staying ahead means asking the right questions. What truly impacts margins? What overlooked data could unlock more value? How do we bridge the gap between technical insights and commercial decisions? In our first episode, Bora sits down with Teemu Vekkeli, with nearly 20 years of experience across onshore and offshore projects, operations, and asset management. Teemu shares key lessons from the field, including: The most underutilized data in wind energy: Turbine parameter settings can reveal operational changes that may explain performance issues that often puzzle asset owners. Why alignment is crucial: Many critical decisions, such as contracts, budgets, and data access, are frontloaded. Making sure everyone is aligned early on helps prevent costly mistakes down the line. #RideTheWildWind is all about cutting through the noise and focusing on what truly drives profitability in wind energy. ▶️ Watch Episode 1 here: https://lnkd.in/dF7rFE5v

  • "The price of peace is eternal vigilance" - a principle that rings especially true in wind energy. Just published a deep dive into a gearbox failure case that unfolded over 6 months, showing why there's no room for complacency in turbine maintenance. Despite advanced monitoring systems, what started as subtle oil pressure anomalies led to complete breakdown. The case reveals why we must challenge our assumptions and standard protocols and learn from the space industry's "prove-safe" mindset.
