We are the leading kidney research charity in the UK.

About us

Kidney Research UK is the largest UK charity dedicated to research into the prevention, treatment and management of kidney disease. Kidney Research UK also dedicates its work to improving patient care and raising awareness of kidney disease. Over three million lives in the UK are threatened by chronic kidney disease and it can strike anyone at any age, male or female. This is why Kidney Research UK is dedicated to improving the understanding of kidney disease, its causes and treatments. The only treatments available to patients are a transplant, in which there is a huge shortage of available organ donors, or a life on dialysis, a life sustaining treatment - but which can severely restrict daily life. The charity is making important scientific breakthroughs all the time and medical researchers are constantly developing improvements in treatments. However, we can only currently fund one in five research projects presented to us and scientific advances can only be sustained, and improved, if we succeed in raising our income and for that we need your help.

Calling for action in Scotland! Yesterday we hosted an event in Edinburgh to launch our Scotland Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) Action Plan. This plan has been developed over the last 12 months by a working group chaired by Professor Jeremy Hughes and includes patients, GPs, nephrologists and industry observers. The plan makes 19 recommendations on how the diagnosis and treatment of CKD can be improved in Scotland. The Minister for Public Health and Women’s Health, Jenni Minto MSP, spoke at the event alongside our chief executive, Sandra Currie, and kidney patient Angela Riley, who shared an emotional account of what it’s like to live with CKD and to be on dialysis. It was great to hear the Minister publicly welcome the plan. Here's to seeing CKD prioritised in Scottish government and healthcare policy. Read about the action plan: https://bit.ly/48C0fJu

A new device has been designed for patients to capture kidney cells in their urine at home. The Cell Catcher collects kidney cells which are present in the urine of patients with rare genetic disorders and diseases such as Bardet-Biedel syndrome (BBS). In the UK, BBS affects approximately 1 in 100,000 babies born (BBS UK) and at present, there is no cure. This new, non-invasive method will allow researchers to learn more about these conditions from across the country and could lead to personalised treatments. Read what this will mean for kidney patients here: https://bit.ly/40Tl5m3 [Image description: A Cell Catcher box packaging is in the background with the contents of it in front. We are calling on the Scottish Government to right a 20-year wrong! Our new action plan comes 20 years after the then-Health Secretary turned down an opportunity to publish a plan for chronic kidney disease (CKD). We assembled a dedicated working group, including nephrologists, GPs, and patients, who made 19 recommendations to minimise preventable CKD and kidney failure, prioritising the health of more than 600,000 Scots thought to be living with CKD. Read the full action plan here: https://bit.ly/48C0fJu [Image description: A quote from Professor Andy Rees sits on a light pink background with a picture of Andy in the forefront. The quote reads "We believed back in 2004 that the only way to ensure people with chronic kidney disease had quick and equitable access to the right treatment was through a national plan. The Health Minister at that time told us that a national plan was not the best way forward and that the Scottish Government would instead seek alternative ways to drive improvements for people with CKD. Twenty years later and that positive change is yet to happen." 'Professor Andy Rees, former president of the Renal Association of Great Britain and Ireland' sits below the quote in bold writing.]
