No one wants the lights going out during their surgical procedure. Our partnership with Smile Train stops that from happening. Kids Operating Room and Smile Train are celebrating success across Nigeria and into sub-Saharan Africa. Building operating rooms together creates capacity for care. Training local healthcare professionals and deploying the Solar Surgery System lets hospitals use that capacity to give care. Developed in our #Dundee Centre for Global Operations, the Solar Surgery system has now been installed in more than 20 hospitals across Nigeria. The system transforms lives and hospitals’ capacity to give urgently needed care across low-income countries. “This project with NASA has life-changing potential for patients in low-resource settings." 🗣️ KidsOR Co-Founder Garreth Wood. Our collaboration with NASA is all about bringing cutting-edge technology into low-resource operating rooms - connecting potentially life-saving equipment with children in desperate need of care. 💙 "I’m incredibly proud of our team’s expertise in bringing surgical care to the world’s most vulnerable children. Together, we’re making sure access to oxygen isn’t a barrier to survival.” 🚀

📢 The oxygen crisis in global health is real. In low- and middle-income countries worldwide, children’s lives are at risk simply due to a lack of clean, safe oxygen. Respiratory infections alone killed over 500,000 children in 2021. 😓 A lack of oxygen is no reason for a child to suffer - anywhere. That’s why we’re working with NASA in an unprecedented collaboration, testing a piece of pioneering equipment that could bring a lasting solution to this issue on a global scale. 🌍 🌕 Originally designed for Moon and Mars missions, NASA’s Medical Ceramic Oxygen Generator could revolutionise oxygen supply in KidsOR theatres. This project will bring cutting-edge space tech to low-resource operating rooms, marking a milestone in global health. We’re beyond thrilled to work with NASA, merging innovation from space exploration with the urgent needs of children’s health worldwide. Together, we’re breaking new ground to save lives. 💙

We have major news to share... 🚀 🙌 We’re beyond proud to announce a truly groundbreaking project between Kids Operating Room and NASA – the leading authority in space technology. For the first time, we’ll be looking to bring pioneering space technology into some of the world’s most resource-limited hospitals, all in the name of combatting a devastating oxygen crisis that’s claiming countless children's lives. 🏥 This is a monumental step for Kids Operating Room. Bringing NASA-developed oxygen systems into some of the world’s toughest healthcare settings could be truly transformative for global health - we can’t wait to see the impact! 😁

📍 Mogadishu, Somalia. Decades of conflict and political instability had shattered Somalia's healthcare system. 🇸🇴 The knock-on effect? Millions of children left vulnerable, suffering - or even dying - from a simple accident or routine illness. Earlier this year, Kids Operating Room & @Smile Train installed a new theatre here that gives these children hope. 🙌 The challenges? Endless. Security risks, logistical barriers, supply issues. But the life-changing impact of this work? Absolutely worth it. 💙 Safe, timely surgery is now possible for thousands of Somali children. This is why we do what we do.
