Local government network: together for healthy seas, clean beaches and thriving coastal communities.
About us
We are international network of local governments with a shared concern for the seas that sustain us. With over 80 member municipalities in eight countries, we represent more than five million citizens in Europe. Founded in Denmark in 1990, our mission is to prevent pollution and to protect, preserve and enhance the seas and coastal waters of the North-East Atlantic and Baltic regions for future generations. Our members are committed to finding, implementing and sharing positive solutions. We believe that through cooperation and collaboration, we can tackle the most pressing challenges facing the marine environment. Together, we are a powerful voice that influences decision makers at regional, national and international levels. KIMO members also enjoy opportunities to exchange knowledge and experience nationally and internationally, keep up to date with important developments in laws and regulations and to develop and take part in projects with real local impacts.

🚨 PFAS pollution alert A new UK study has found that the processes intended to decontaminate noxious liquid landfill waste before it enters rivers and sewers have been found to instead boost the levels of banned #PFAS such as PFOA and PFOS, in some cases by as much as 1,335%. 😱 While the EU is considering a ground-breaking proposal to regulate thousands of PFAS as one class, the UK's response to PFAS is lagging behind. WE will continue to maintain pressure on both EU and British policymakers to ban the entire class of PFAS chemicals. https://lnkd.in/d9FfGxxD #BanPFAS

"Regarding #PFAS, the forever chemicals, she said they would be phased out from consumer products. Additional guidance would be provided to companies, which should support them in planning and deciding on investments. She said there is no precise date for this process at the moment but assured that it will be done as soon as possible."
📣 Commissioner-designate for Environment, Water Resilience and Competitive Circular Economy Jessika Roswall confirms REACH revision will build on existing work and prioritise protection. 🧪 She also says REACH revision is important to gather more information on endocrine disrupting chemicals. In October 2016 KIMO's General Assembly passed a Resolution on #Microplastics calling all European governments to: "tighten controls on discharges from from domestic sources such as washing machines to prevent microplastics and microfibres from entering the marine environment". Two days ago a bill to make filters mandatory in all washing machines passed its first hurdle in the UK Parliament 👏 Let's keep up the pressure! 💪

The Ayes have it for the Microplastic Filters (Washing Machines) Bill Today, Tuesday 29th October 2024 in the House of Commons. Alberto Costa introduced the Bill which will require washing machine manufacturers to fit microfibre-catching filters in all new domestic and commercial washing machines. Importantly the Bill also aims to raise awareness of the polluting effects of microplastics in our Ocean, rivers, seas and waterways; to make provision for promotion about the use of microfibre capturing filters in washing machines and consequences of microfibres in the water system. Two years on, presenting the bill again, supported and co-sponsored by cross party MPs, Alberto Costa made the case for fitting microfibre filters, including how microfibres are polluting our Ocean, seas, rivers and watersystems, and are having a detrimental effect on planet and human health and to encourage the government to work with washing machine manufacturers. This bill has the support of the stakeholders, including the The WI (National Federation of Women's Institutes) cross party MPs, solution providers, OEMs, Scientists and Environmental Orgs I believe that this is a sector where the UK can be a global leader and can support UK innovation. Cleaner Seas Group® have developed filters as part of a circular system to capture microfibres, and ensure this pervasive pollution will not escape into our precious global water systems once captured. The second reading of the Bill will be 7th March 2025. Please put the date in your diaries and lend your support to the Bill via your MP. Thank you Alberto for believing in this Bill and ensuring it stays on the Westminster Agenda. ‘3rd time’s a charm’ 🩵🌊🌎💙 Rt Hon Steve Reed OBE MP Fiona Thomas Tobias Arnø Emma Holland-Lindsay Harriet Main Jacob Coad Virginijus Sinkevičius

We're delighted to be a partner in the fantastic TREASURE project. On 7 November 2024, an ambitious wooden chip campaign will be launched as part of this international project, which brings together Denmark, France, Belgium, the Netherlands and Germany in the fight against plastic pollution in our marine environment. The ambition of the campaign is to map macroplastic migration through our aquatic environment, and identify areas of action to prevent macroplastics from ending up in the sea. We do this by releasing 10,000 wooden blocks as markers for macroplastic travel from land to sea. 🔹 Kickstart at Klimatorium's Global Youth Climate Summit The campaign is launched with an official ceremony, where 500 wooden blocks are set out at the cableway in Lemvig Harbor during Klimatorium's youth climate meeting 'Global Youth Climate Summit'. The ceremony will be held on 𝟳. November from 𝟭𝟬.𝟰𝟱-𝟭𝟭.𝟰𝟱 and begins with a presentation of the TREASURE project at children's level. The first piece of wood is then thrown into the water by European Space Agency - ESA Astronaut Andreas Mogensen, this year's keynote speaker at the 'Global Youth Climate Summit'. Approx. 500 children and young people will then each throw their wooden piece. Everyone is welcome to attend the ceremony and get an insight into the project, which also includes an extensive information campaign, which aims to create behavioral changes and engage the local community actively in the fight against plastic pollution. 🔹 Launch in two phases The 10,000 wooden blocks will be laid out in two phases: November 2024 during the rainy season and summer 2025, spread over 24 locations in Lemvig and Varde Municipality. Each piece is uniquely marked, and we encourage citizens to register found pieces online. ✅ Read more about the project and follow the wooden blocks' journey at www.klimatorium.dk/drifter. Together we can make a difference to our marine environment! 🌊
🚨 Fifty-nine leading scientists from around the world have sent a letter to the UK Government urging it to take a more ambitious approach to regulating #PFAS – the #foreverchemicals – than the previous government. 🌍 PFAS have contaminated every corner of the globe. ❗️In the UK, they have been found in people, drinking water, animals and food. ⚠️There are concerns over their health impacts. 💷The costs to clean up PFAS pollution are huge. The scientists urge the government to match the EU’s approach to regulating PFAS, including a broad grouping approach based on their extreme persistence. Read the letter here ⬇️ https://lnkd.in/er3tgtFy Dr Shubhi Sharma at CHEM Trust, said: “We very much welcome this letter from the scientific community calling for the UK government to strengthen action on toxic forever chemicals. Global scientists understand the threat that these chemicals pose to our health and wildlife and know how urgent it is to speed up regulation to address their costly pollution burden. The new government has inherited a toxic legacy but can now right this wrong. We hope this letter encourages them to ban the use and manufacture of these chemicals as a group and be at the forefront of a global PFAS-free economy.” Read more in CHEM Trust's blog ⬇️ https://lnkd.in/e6xQ9ZB6

It's all about cooperation! 🤝 KIMO Sweden member Sotenäs Kommun together with the voluntary organization Rena Botten and CleanSea are helping to clean up the ocean floor. This past weekend 54 tyres and other rubbish was cleaned up from the seafloor by volunteer divers! 🤿 Last Saturday, another environmental dive was arranged at Smögenbryggan in Smögen. There were two large loads of tires, batteries and other rubbish that were picked up this time and the rescue service helped to wash the jetty clean afterwards.✨ "We are extremely happy that Rena Botten and Clean Sea are volunteering with this important effort", says Katarina Rech, tourist information officer at Sotenäs municipality. "We who operate within Keep Bohuslän Clean work for a cleaner environment, both in the sea and on land." Keep Bohuslän Clean is a collaboration between the Bohuslän municipalities, the West Coast Foundation, Keep Sweden Clean and the West Sweden Tourist Board. Thanks to everyone who pitched in and helped out on the day! 🙌 📷 Sotenäs kommun #sotenäskommun #renabotten #cleansea #miljödyk #hållbohuslänrent #västkuststiftelsen #hållsverigerent #turistrådetvästsverige

Great work being done by KIMO Sweden member municipality Tanums Kommun on their ghost fishing project! 💪 Throughout 2024, professional fishermen have been trawling and professional divers diving for lost fishing gear. The project has been very successful and several hundred lobster pots have been salvaged. In addition, many lobsters and fish have been released back into the sea. 🦞🐟➡️🌊 The projects are financed by the EU's ocean and fisheries fund via the Swedish Agricultural Agency and by the County Administrative Board in Västra Götaland via LOVA. Co-financed by the Maritime and Water Authority through 1:4 EHFVF funds for transport and recovery of lost fishing gear. 📷 Tanums kommun
