🚀 US Solar Sector Reaches New Heights! 🌞 In the second quarter of 2024, the US solar sector achieved a significant milestone, topping 31 GW of module manufacturing capacity. This is nearly four times more than when the Inflation Reduction Act was passed in 2022, marking a pivotal moment for the renewable energy industry. The recent report by the Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA) and Wood Mackenzie highlights impressive growth. The US installed an astounding 9.4 GW DC of power generation capacity - the highest for any second quarter on record. Since the enactment of the IRA, a total of 75 GW of solar power has been added, which is a testimony to the growing commitment to green energy. However, the path ahead is not without challenges. Michelle Davis from Wood Mackenzie points out that despite the second quarter's success, future solar growth is facing obstacles such as interconnection backlogs, equipment shortages, and labour constraints. The Cottam Solar Project, developed by Island Green Power, now has the official go-ahead to commence construction. This landmark advancement represents a significant stride towards a cleaner and more sustainable future. 🌿 This groundbreaking project, which received its Development Consent Order (DCO) on September 5, 2024, will be built on the border of Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire. Despite facing some local opposition, the comprehensive examination process guided by the Department of Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) has ensured that all ecological and community concerns were addressed. 🔋 Big news for Tucson! Tucson Electric Power (TEP) is set to build its second 800MWh battery energy storage system (BESS), the Roadrunner Reserve II project. With this new addition, TEP aims to bolster reliability and effectively manage the supply and demand, particularly during peak summer usage. Scheduled for commissioning in early 2026, Roadrunner Reserve II follows the footsteps of its predecessor, a similar 200MW/800MWh project slated for completion in 2025. 📢 Brookfield Renewable U.S. today announces that a Notice of Intent (NOI) has been filed with the Oregon Department of Energy to develop the Speedway Solar and Battery Storage Project, located east of Grass Valley. This project underscores Brookfield Renewable's long-term commitment to advancing sustainable energy solutions and supporting the transition to a low-carbon economy. The Speedway Project solar power facility will be coupled with a battery energy storage system, enhancing the reliability and stability of the regional energy grid. Akaysha Energy Secures AU$650 Million Deal for Australia BESS Project 🌏🔋 Akaysha Energy has closed a massive AU$650 million deal to fund its new 1.6GWh+ Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) project in New South Wales' Central-West Orana Renewable Energy Zone (REZ). This landmark deal, the single biggest financing for a standalone BESS project globally to date, underscores Akaysha's commitment to sustainable energy solutions. This project will play a crucial role in supporting Australia's transition towards a net-zero carbon future. Utilising Tesla's Megapack BESS technology and integrated by Consolidated Power, the project is set to commence commercial operations in 2026. The funding, with a three-year term, includes AU$75 million for project security obligations. Notably, banks from both domestic (including ANZ, CBA, Westpac) and international (BNP, CIBC, DBS, ING, etc.) have come together to support this transformative venture.
