Heide Refinery: Holistic thinking and an open culture of discussion Our focus has been to increase understanding of complex inter-relationships of the refinery's value chain. As part of the Klesch Group, employees now think in overall contexts in order to understand and take account of mechanisms and interdependencies. At the same time, the establishment of an "open mindset" has become part of Heide’s self-image. This promotes open and critical questioning of learned behaviours and existing processes. It also helps to discuss new ways of operating our production systems and to derive measures whilst maintaining safety for people, technology and the environment.

Following the acquisition of Heide in 2010 and Kalundborg Refinery in 2022, Klesch has prioritised creation of long-term value via operational excellence. The focus has been the enhancement of operations, regularity, and availability of process units, helping teams to develop learnings and grow efficiency. Across both refineries the focus was product mix, commercial arrangements, equipment and increasing throughput. To commercially adjust and improve the sites, while maintaining operational expertise and looking at more operational KPIs and Data. In the early stage, the Klesch leaders collaborated with teams at each refinery and it became clear that a culture change was required. The team at Heide benefited from significant learnings that helped to deliver substantial savings, to expand the number of products manufactured and, by bringing forward what customers were looking for, moving onto the winning side. At Kalundborg, profound team changes and strategic advantages emphasised a newfound focus on efficiency, innovation and commercial optimisation.
