About us

Play your part in the Lake District National Park - the UK's latest World Heritage Site. Discover. Explore. Inspire. Around 200 staff work for the Lake District National Park. They include rangers taking care of our special landscape, advisers at our information centres who make sure tourists have an amazing visit, property teams, planners and archaeologists. Administrative staff and those working at our head office help provide the infrastructure and support vital to our care of the outdoors. The Lake District is home to the highest mountain in England in Scafell Pike, and the deepest lakes in Wastwater and Windermere. Our purpose is to enhance the unique environment of the National Park and manage it as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, where: · the landscape and its diverse wildlife thrives · the more than 40,000 people who live and work in the park create vibrant, prosperous communities · our millions of visitors enjoy an outstanding experience. Find out more about the Lake District as a World Heritage Site at: www.lakesworldheritage.co.uk and use #WeAreTheLakes on social media to celebrate this special place. Our journey towards this vision requires us to work alongside others who share our dependency on, and passion for, this inspirational part of the country. So, in addition to delivering our own services with professionalism and pride, we will continue to work closely with the Lake District National Park Partnership and other stakeholders. As stewards of a truly special landscape, about which Wordsworth said, “every man has a right and an interest who has an eye to perceive and a heart to enjoy”, we will encourage others to help us create a truly sustainable National Park. • This week our Fell Top Assessors have experienced sunshine, hail, wind and rain on their daily ascent of Helvellyn 🏔️ Jim has shared an update from Helvellyn today explaining how bitterly cold it is on the fells despite wearing the same layers and barriers as he did six weeks ago. Emphasising the importance of being prepared to climb the fells despite the recent spell of sunshine. The weather this weekend looks a continued mix of sunshine, wind, rain and possibly hail. • The treescape of the Lake District is of huge importance visually, culturally and ecologically. It is considered a hotspot for ancient trees, which are particularly valuable for birds, insects, mosses and lichens. Many trees in the Lake District are protected by conservation areas or tree protection orders (TPOs). Conservation areas protect all trees of all species with a stem diameter of 75mm or more when measured at 1.5 m above ground level. TPOs are used to protect trees and woodlands if their removal or changes to them would have a significant impact on the local environment and its enjoyment by the public. If you're looking to instruct tree surgery work, it's important you choose someone fully qualified with knowledge of these protections which help preserve our landscape. Find more information about what to consider when contracting tree surgery work here: https://lnkd.in/eCdZ4-U3 📸 Michael Harvey
