Nature is in crisis. Together we can save it.

About us

Passionate about nature, dedicated to saving it. Since we started on our mission in 1889, the threats to nature have continued to grow, but we've grown to meet them too. We’re now the largest nature conservation charity in the UK (although our work stretches far beyond that), consistently delivering successful conservation, forging powerful new partnerships with other organisations and inspiring others to stand up and give nature the home it deserves.

"Green vs growth" is a false choice.   It’s out of date and doesn’t deal with resilience for the future.   A great conversation on Radio 4’s The Today Debate last night, thanks to all the panellists and producers (link to the full show is in the comments section).   There was follow up on BBCR4 Today this morning when the Secretary of State pointed to the proposed Nature Restoration Fund. With thoughtful, appropriate application, we believe the fund has a role to play. But it can’t be the whole answer.   Because nature is on its knees: we need plans to recover nature, not just compensate damage. Tackling the nature crisis needs as much ambition as tackling economic growth and climate change. We can have a better system that works to align all these urgent requirements. Nothing less will do.   We need to see nature embedded at the heart of the planning system and growth plans. We’ll keep making this case.   #NatureRestoration #Growth #GreenGrowth #ClimateChange

The latest RACE report (Racial Action for the Climate Emergency) is published today showing the ongoing racial diversity gap between the UK working population and staff in environment, conservation, climate and sustainability charities. The RSPB has proudly supported the RACE Report since it began in 2022 and our work to ensure race equity at the RSPB informed the data and analysis it provides. We are now joined by 160 other organisations all committed to driving race equity forwards. The latest report shows the representation of people of colour and racially or ethnically minoritised groups across the environmental sector is only 4.5%, compared to a national average of 16%. Whilst only 3.7% of the RSPB's workforce are people of colour this figure is an improvement on last year's 2.8%. We are taking a series of actions to improve Race Equity within the organisation: 🔸 Scoping and gathering evidence: We’re identifying gaps and learning from what works best, to make the RSPB stronger and more inclusive while delivering more for nature. 🔸 Immediate actions on wellbeing: We’ll provide better support for those affected by racism. 🔸 Measurable commitments: We stay accountable by aligning our work against clear independent goals. 🔸 Influencing and collaborating: We’ll continue to partner with colleagues and communities to drive collective change and collaboration to protect nature. 🔸 Planning for the long term: We’re creating and improving our processes to make sure that race equity is embedded into everything we do right from the start.     At the RSPB, our vision is to see a shared world where wildlife, wild places and all people thrive. We simply cannot achieve this mission by staying as we are.    Much like restoring and protecting nature, progress doesn’t happen overnight, and whilst we can see green shoots of progress there is much still to do. We’re determined to get this right and help contribute to change across the sector, because everyone should be able to have access to and play their part in the future of conservation.

The hush of reeds in the wind. The deep boom of a hidden Bittern. The sudden scatter of waders over the mudflats... Wetlands aren’t empty landscapes...they’re alive. They store carbon, hold back floodwaters, and are home to some of our most extraordinary wildlife. This World Wetlands Day, step into the heart of one. Here’s why you should plan a visit this year: 👇 #WorldWetlandsDay
