Landscape Ecology UK

Non-profit Organization Management

Promoting understanding and application of landscape ecology across the UK and beyond

About us

Landscape Ecology UK aims to promote interest, learning and understanding of landscape ecology. We are the UK Regional Chapter of the International Association for #LandscapeEcology. Landscape ecology is a meeting point of different disciplines, combining natural and cultural aspects of landscape and seascape. We encourage communication between scientists, policy makers, planners and practitioners concerned with landscape ecology in the UK and beyond. We'll post here what we think is interesting landscape ecology content to generate discussion and enable networks to grow. Join us as a member to learn more about landscape ecology, to meet like-minded people and to widen your landscape. See our website for more, including ways you can volunteer.

On day 2 (8th April) we have a visit to the Blenheim Palace Estate lined up to see their Stage Zero scheme - restoring natural processes to regulate the flow of the River Dorn. The event is open to our members (student membership = £15, full membership £30/year). Student members go free. Full members within 5 years of their last degree are welcome to join for £30. All lunches, refreshments and a dinner are included. https://lnkd.in/ewzTAsJ6

  • We are looking forward to our conference excursion to Lauriston Farm, Edinburgh, on the 3rd July - a 100 acre site run by a workers cooperative, engaging in habitat restoration and farming methods to promote biodiversity. Our conference keynote speaker, Dr Hannah Rudman FBCS FRSA, previously put together this video…. https://lnkd.in/eHv8A6SN Details of our conference can be found here: https://lnkd.in/eUyWwdsb #conference #landscape #ecology #sustainability #farming

  • Our first Landscape Ecology UK conference was back in 1992 - back when we were called IaleUK. What have you always enjoyed about our conferences? Do you remember any in particular? Our community have often commented that they have enjoyed the warm, friendly atmosphere, and how easy it is to network and build lasting connections at our events (the value for money has also been appreciated 😉 ) See information about our past conferences and upcoming 2025 conference here: https://lnkd.in/eqhZvifR

  • Did you hear – if you’re joining us for day 3 of our conference you have a choice between two excursions! If you’re after a full day adventure, join us on a visit to the Carrifran Wildwood:  The Wildwood project seeks to re-create a valley of wooded wilderness in the Southern Uplands with most of the rich diversity of native species that existed there thousands of years ago before human activities became dominant. The 1620 acre valley in the Moffat Hills was bought through the hard work of a dedicated team of volunteers and the help of many generous supporters.    On 1st January 2000, the purchase was completed, entry to the land gained and the first trees were planted at Carrifran. Since then over 750,000 native trees, all from local provenance stock, have been planted in the valley.    The first ecological restoration project of its kind, the Carrifran Wildwood is hoped to be an inspiration and an educational resource to many over the next millennium. • We are pleased to announce our second keynote speaker for the Landscape Ecology UK 2025 conference: Monitoring Ecosystem Recovery at the Landscape Scale!    Yvonne Edwards is a Chartered Forester and Chartered Ecologist working for the University of Edinburgh developing the innovative Forest and Peatland Programme.  The Programme is creating woodland and restoring peatland both on owned land and with partners across Scotland and will be developing a monitoring, reporting and verification system on metrics that will include carbon, biodiversity and social benefits.  This data and sites will be long term learning and research resources. As the Data Manager for the Native Woodland Survey of Scotland, Yvonne developed this national resource of validated ecological data, that was the first full record of Scotland’s Native Woodlands. In addition, she has worked on the restoration of vacant and derelict land sites to woodland, on habitat and species conservation and led a team planning and managing both new and existing forests.
