Thanks to Open City and all the great volunteers who facilitated our being able to open up our Corner House project this weekend. It’s been a privilege to be able to show our work to all the visitors who stoically queued to come and visit us! Mercifully the weather (mostly) held. See you next year!
About us
Langstaff Day Architects was founded in 2015 by Nicholas Langstaff and Joanna Day. Working together for 20 years, they share a passion for designs generated by understanding people, producing solutions that have not been anticipated. Together they’ve built a successful London-based practice working on high profile community, sports and leisure, education and residential projects. Embedded within all design is an ambition to make genuinely sustainable and inclusive projects, finding creative approaches to complex briefs. Recent projects include The Technology Services Building (2022), The AELTC Community Tennis Centre (2024), The Media Centre at Wimbledon (2024), and The Corner House self-build (2024).

We're thrilled to be able to showcase our almost-complete Corner House in Hackney this weekend as part of London Open House 2024. Open House is a great opportunity to see architecture that's not normally open to the public. Please do come along - we'd love to see you. A little bit about the project: Built by on the site of a small dilapidated storage shed, The Corner House uses every available metre to bring light into a three-storey home. The house occupies an enviable position at the corner of Butterfield Green, allowing the first floor to open up to and peer through the trees whilst the rest of the house balances privacy with natural daylight. The site's position brought planning complexity with it, and the form needed to respond to the constraints of a subservient rear garden that is also prominent corner plot. The low energy house will be net zero once complete with two PV panels, has an exposed engineered timber structure and is supported by sustainable technologies (including an exhaust air heat pump) to provide a comfortable and resilient internal environment. The Corner House is our self-build project, and a home for modern inner city living; embracing the need for spaces that can be flexible for home working, guests staying and for studying. This is a sneak preview - The project, constructed by AF Build is due to complete in the next few weeks. Be prepared to walk 4-5 metres across uneven ground to get to the front door. We will help you where we can. More information available via the Open House listings guide: https://lnkd.in/emj5xZwa

At the AELTC Community Tennis Centre, we have reduced the use of potable water for irrigation by over 80% through an integrated water management approach - Sustainable drainage (SuDS) in action. The site no longer floods. Water is cleaned, stored and reused. Nature thrives and biodiversity increases. And look how pretty it is... Langstaff Day Architects reposted this
Not all projects are permanent. At the temporary players' lounge at Wimbledon, Langstaff Day Architects have used a light touch to sustainably define space without adding permanent walls or ceilings. Bespoke circular fabric lights around existing columns help zone the space. The light temperature follows circadian rhythms, mimicking natural light to enhance a sense of wellbeing to those relaxing in the space and to offset a lack of natural daylight. 'Partitions' are made of fabric, a paper concertina and demountable suspended chains. Photography: Courtesy of The All England Lawn Tennis Club / Adam Warner https://lnkd.in/eF96KqNG #MemberMonday

Surely a building’s entrance is one of its most important moments… We aim for lovely, legible, and welcoming… #AELTCCommunitySportsCentre #Wimbledon #RaynesPark

Is Passivhaus becoming mainstream? We recently had a client approach us who had been to a Passivhaus seminar and specifically wanted their new home to be a Passive House. This is a dream for architects like us. We think our clients were drawn to the framework of defined goals - such as low energy and interior comfort, which helped them clarify their ambitions. We feel that it's a fallacy that natural light is excluded from Passivhaus designs - this couple included an artist for whom natural light is paramount. Our concept design includes a painting studio with northlight, as well as a garden courtyard to maximise natural light throughout. #PassivHaus #PassiveHouse #SustainableDesign #DesigningWithLight
