The Power of the POD. A quiet revolution is happening beneath the waterline of superyachts. Electric azimuthing propulsion devices—better known as PODs—are starting to challenge traditional shaft-driven systems. While these innovative units have been a staple in the cruise industry for decades, they’re now making waves in yacht design, offering potential advantages in manoeuvrability, space optimisation, and efficiency. But do these claims hold up? And what does this shift mean for the future of superyacht design? At Lateral, we wanted to find out. Through in-depth research and technical analysis, we've explored the real-world impact of POD technology—its benefits, its trade-offs, and what it means for owners and designers alike.
