🌟 Karin Oleinikova won 3rd place in the Local Leaders category of the London Eco Champion Awards in 2023. Karin works for Heath Hands, the conservation and community charity that helps look after Hampstead Heath for people and wildlife. Karin is the "unsung eco champion" of Hampstead Heath, where she coordinates thousands of volunteers and participants on the Heath's nature conservation, and community programs to involve in the natural world both new audiences and the underrepresented groups of our society. Today, the World Meteorological Organization published a report detailing how sea level rise in the region is above the global average. The report also shows that in the region, sea surface temperatures have risen three times faster than the global average and marine heatwaves have approximately doubled in frequency since 1980. “The reason is clear: greenhouse gases – overwhelmingly generated by burning fossil fuels – are cooking our planet. And the sea is taking the heat – literally,” said Mr Guterres, as he urged the world to "answer the SOS before it is too late." Earlier this year, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said Australia would be ramping up its extraction and use of gas until “2050 and beyond,” despite calls to phase out fossil fuels. In addition, they also sold their own designed sustainable bags. They went on to win 1st place in our Junior Heroes category in 2023. 🌟 India & Elara had the idea of putting solar panels on the sunnier parts of their school’s roof to increase the use of clean energy. They researched the cost of solar panels and how much the school currently spend in electricity bills, as well as the cost of installing them on a new purpose-built roof. These amazing young girls showed the initiative of true eco-champions, and won them 2nd place in our Mini Warriors category in 2023. Education is a key pillar of our community programme and we work to raise awareness of air pollution and the measures that can be taken to reduce it. Our Schools Programme offers a variety of workshops, projects, and events to students of all ages to support them in their understanding of air quality. We offer primary schools assemblies on indoor and outdoor pollution. We tailor these to the age of children and ensure they are educational and interactive. These assemblies offer the children the means to take action and make tangible changes, such as changing the way they go or get taken to school, to creating an eco-committee, or tuning off the lights and recycling more. Students leave feeling empowered to make the right choices and encourage those around them to do the same.
