With the proposed changes to the NPPF, we could see a material shift in how Green Belt land is managed. The introduction of the new 'Grey Belt'—land that has been previously developed or offers limited Green Belt value—opens the door for more housing opportunities. However, this raises an important question for all of us involved in BNG: how do we balance development with nature? As more Green Belt land becomes available for housing, ensuring that biodiversity targets are met will be crucial. We need to find the right balance, integrating BNG strategies to assist in protecting ecosystems while still delivering much-needed homes. The path forward? Thoughtful collaboration and strategic planning in advance to balance housing needs with ecological preservation and BNG regulations.

As conservation policies and mechanisms like Conservation Covenants continue to gain traction, there’s a growing need for skilled individuals entering the field. This shift creates unique opportunities and highlights the importance of fostering cognitive diversity from a range of backgrounds. At Legacy Habitat Banks, we believe that apprenticeships play a vital role in supporting this transition. Here’s why: 🎓 Increased Access to Education: Degree apprenticeships, such as the Environmental Management and Sustainability Degree Apprenticeship at Harper Adams University, provide an accessible route for individuals to gain a degree while working in the industry. This model encourages inclusivity and attracts talent from diverse backgrounds. 💼 Practical, On-the-Job Experience: Apprenticeships enable participants to gain real-world experience while working alongside seasoned professionals. This hands-on approach bridges the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application, ensuring a skilled and work-ready workforce. 🌱 Addressing Complex Challenges: The introduction of policies such as Biodiversity Net Gain places increased demand on ecological expertise from key stakeholders such as developers, local planning authorities, responsible bodies and habitat banks. There’s a pressing need for fresh perspectives. Apprenticeships help build that capacity by equipping individuals with both the technical and practical skills needed to address these challenges head-on. 🎫 Industry-Recognised Qualifications: With degrees accredited by professional institutions, apprenticeships offer formal recognition and pathways to professional memberships. This benefits both the apprentices and employers by aligning skills with industry standards. 🏢 Support for Employers: For employers like LHB, apprenticeships provide an opportunity to build and expand our talent pipeline, ensuring we have the right people with the right skills to support the growing demand for high-integrity biodiversity net gain initiatives. Apprenticeships are not just an investment in people—they’re an investment in the future of conservation.
