LiNa Energy
Appliances, Electrical, and Electronics Manufacturing
LiNa Energy is leading the charge to develop and commercialise low-cost solid state sodium batteries.
About us
LiNa Energy is a developer and provider of low-cost solid state sodium batteries, with a focus on the renewable energy storage market. LiNa Energy was created as a spin-out of Lancaster University, where the founders Dr Gene Lewis and Dr Richard Dawson combined their expertise in ceramics and electrochemistry and applied this to the problem of energy storage. Since then, the company has developed an innovative solid state sodium-based battery technology which offers superior safety and sustainability standards compared to lithium-based batteries. Thanks to its patented design and use of abundant raw component materials, LiNa’s batteries are lower cost to deploy and offer higher performance than lithium-ion alternatives. LiNa Energy is privately held and run by a leadership team comprising the original founders and talent drawn from energy sector and big four consulting firms. 🌟 Spotlight on Work Experience: Welcoming Future Talent at LiNa Energy! 🌟 We were thrilled to have Corey Campbell, who’s about to start A-levels in Computing Science, Chemistry, and Physics at Dallam School in Lancaster, join us for work experience placement this summer. Here's what he had to say about his time with us: "My time at LiNa Energy was a genuinely wonderful experience. Everyone there was super friendly and willing to answer any questions I had. The various experiments and tasks I worked on were always interesting and made me feel as if I were actually contributing to the team." Corey’s highlights included: 💫 Cell Assembly on Day 1: "It was fascinating to see how all the different parts of a cell fit together to form a complete cell." 💫Meaningful Conversations: "I really enjoyed the genuine conversations I had with some of the people in the workplace, as we shared many interests and hobbies." We're proud to support the next generation of innovators and look forward to seeing Corey achieve great things. Thank you for being part of the LiNa Energy team this summer! #BackToSchool #CleanTech #Science #Innovation

Here's a glimpse of our dilatometer in action in the lab 🔬 We use it to measure the dimensional changes in our battery materials as they undergo variations in temperature with time. By studying the thermal expansion or contraction of key components - like the solid electrolyte, cathode, and anode - we can ensure these materials fit together seamlessly at any temperature. This is crucial for preventing gaps and minimising stress and strain, which leads to enhanced lifetime and reliability in our final cells. The dilatometer is essential for verifying the compatibility and stability of the materials we use, ensuring our batteries stand up to the rigorous conditions of both manufacturing and operation 🔋 ✨ #science #innovation #cleantech #batterytechnology

This article from The Guardian highlights the pressing need to accelerate the development of renewable energy and sustainable storage solutions 🌱 🔋 We often think of climate crises as issues affecting far-off regions, but this serves as a crucial reminder that the impacts are already hitting close to home. At LiNa Energy, we’re committed to driving this change by developing innovative solutions that contribute to a more sustainable future. The urgency is clear - there's no time to waste. #renewables #batterytechnology #energystorage #climatecrisis

🔬 Update from the Lab: 3D Printer in Action 🔬 Our 3D printer never fails to impress! Here it is, hard at work printing a cell holder designed for storing cells in nitrogen bags - an essential step for our 10kWh cell build. This precisely crafted structure ensures our cells remain perfectly organised until they're ready to be integrated into the modules. One of the key advantages of our 3D printer is its speed and efficiency. It allows us to swiftly transition from concept to testing, transforming our ideas into reality and continuously optimising our processes at LiNa HQ 🚀 #Innovation #3DPrinting #TechInAction

This article from The Guardian on wind and solar energy overtaking fossil fuels for the first time to provide 30% of EU electricity is great to see 📈 However, as the grid shifts towards renewables, the need for energy storage becomes crucial to manage the unpredictability of wind and sun, and effectively manage energy consumption and distribution. At LiNa Energy, we're addressing this challenge head-on and are excited to be part of the solution for a more sustainable future🚀 #RenewableEnergy #EnergyStorage

Shout out to some of the team who managed to carve out some time on top of their busy schedules to do some volunteering in the community last week 💚 The team spent the afternoon immersed in nature at Forrest Hills in Lancaster University, clearing competing species around sapling trees by raking and chopping. They even managed to rescue a frog 🐸 Supporting our local environment reminds us why we do what we do. Great work team 🙌 Sophie Santon, Ricardo Couto, Kris Barr, Gene Lewis, James Morrish, Daniel Matthews, Duncan Bloemers, Richard Dawson, Diana Antonova, Dean Batty, Jordan Stirzaker, Lauren Heavyside, Will Tope #sustainability #environment #cleantech
