Olympic Cycling Champion Chris Hoy who sadly has advanced cancer which is terminal is calling for the NHS to change its advice on prostate cancer testing. The NHS will review whether to change its advice on testing in light of Sir Chris Hoy's "powerful" call for more younger men to be checked, the health secretary has said. There is a really simple and easy to use 30-second risk checker on the Prostate Cancer UKwebsite here which anyone can use. And you can read more about the Chris Hoy story on the BBC here: https://bbc.in/3AoBt2Z #prostatecancer #cancerchecks #prostatecanceruk #chrishoy #signsandsymptoms

Making a positive difference to lives affected by cancer in Shropshire, Telford & Wrekin, and Mid Wales
About us
Our aim at Lingen Davies Cancer Fund is to support local cancer services ensuring people can access the best cancer care and services locally. We strive to make a positive difference to lives affected by cancer in Shropshire, Telford & Wrekin, and Mid Wales. The funds raised by our charity support cancer prevention programmes, help raise awareness about cancer in the wider community, and deliver projects that help people to live well with or beyond cancer. We fund equipment, buildings and people to make early cancer diagnoses, treatment and support quicker and even more effective. Recent funding projects include the creation of additional clinic space within the Lingen Davies Cancer Centre, new equipment to benefit dermatology patients, those going through chemotherapy, and improved technologies to assist in radiotherapy planning and delivery. In the community we fund the excellent iCan programme - a cancer rehabilitation programme which is free for all to access. Since its introduction in 2021 the service has supported more than 400 people.

National trustees week is coming to a close and we wanted to thank all our trustees once again for all their time and support. The charity is overseen and held accountable by our board of trustees drawn from the local community who have a diverse range of backgrounds including medical, accountancy, HR and banking. Our trustees are all local volunteers and trained as cancer champions to support our LiveLife cancer awareness work in Shropshire, Telford and Wrekin and Mid Wales. If you have considered giving something back - perhaps you'd like to become a cancer champion? #ThankYouThursday Thanks to Market Drayton Town Council which has given £250 alongside a bucket of donations towards a HMP Stoke Heath's nominated charity to thank inmates for their help making bird, bug and bat boxes. The boxes have been distributed to local residents and schools, and put up in the town's cemetery and other public places. The boxes have aided the council to fulfil its biodiversity policy, and so a donation has been made to the prison's chosen charity - the Lingen Davies Cancer Fund. The bird, bug and bat boxes were given to residents in the town for free. However, residents were asked if they would like to supply a small donation - if able to do so. Our Communication and Marketing Manager met with town councillors and the governor of Stoke Heath Prison, Mark Greenhaf, to thank them for the total of £108.47 was raised in the donations bucket. Thanks also to the Shropshire Star for running this story! You can read the full story in the Shropshire Star here: https://bit.ly/3UulHdA

Today, we officially launched a new project in the region we serve - Bins for Boys! Bins for Boys is calling on public venues which don't have a sanitary bin in their men's toilets to sign up to become a Bins for Boys venue and ensure they have somewhere for men to dispose of their pads, pouches, stomas, catheters, colostomy or ileostomy bags (small intestine v large intestine stoma bags). Incontinence can be a side effect of cancer and cancer treatment for bowel or prostate treatment (and other illnesses such as Chron's disease and irritable bowel syndrome). The lack of male sanitary bins in public venues such as bars, cafes, leisure facilities etc is letting men down and it's a low-cost and easy fix - we know that many venues aren't aware of the issue, and would happily sign up to become a Bins for Boys venue! Lingen Davies is calling on any public venue with a toilet to ensure that men know they can visit that venue when they are out and about. So we have launched the scheme, created a webpage where venues can sign up, we will supply stickers for the venue to display, add the venue to our interactive google map on the website so men can plan their trips out and plug them joining in on social media (a free business plug!). Bishops Castle in south Shropshire has become our first Bins for Boys venue in the region we serve (Shropshire, Telford and Wrekin and Mid Wales) with 11 venues already signed up. To mark the launch, our CEO Naomi Atkin, our Chair of Trustees Tim Cooper, Mayor of Bishops Castle Josh Dickin, our volunteer and cancer champion Mike-Ashwell and his wife Miranda Ashwell our LiveLife lead who have worked on the project, businesses from Bishops Castle who have pledged to join Bins for Boys and Danny Lloyd - Jones, a 36-year-old bowel cancer survivor from Oswestry who has really got behind the Bins for Boys project and knows from first hand personal experience, how treatment and its aftermath can affect men going out and about. Find out more on and sign up on our website here and please share and spread the word! https://lnkd.in/evPSPU-b And hear from Danny Lloyd - Jones below! #binsforboys #cancercharity #prostatecancer #bowelcancer #pubsinshropshire #pubsinwales #pubsintelford #newcampaign #publicvenues #midwales #shropshire #telfordandwrekin #joinus

Thanks so much to Shrewsbury firefighter Lee Roberts who is donating 10% of the proceeds of his 2025 calendar of Shrewsbury photographs to Lingen Davies. Lee has been taking photographs of Shrewsbury for the last 10 years and has carefully chosen 12 of these to go in the calendar. The images include shots of the High Street, River Severn, the Square and Old Market Hall, the various bridges and Shrewsbury Castle among others. You can see more of these brilliant images and purchase the calendar in our Lingen Davies shop via the link here: https://bit.ly/4dWXbsn Thank you very much Lee for your support which will go towards improving the lives of those living with and beyond cancer in our region.

#MeettheteamMonday We are celebrating 20 years of our operations manager Louise Dawson! Two decades ago, Louise Dawson joined us as an appeals assistant and 20 years on she has been an integral part of the changes that have seen the charity grow to a team of 14. There were just two members of the Lingen Davies Cancer Fund team when Louise joined in 2004. Louise said: “I genuinely can’t believe it has been 20 years since I started. I’ve always embraced the growth as I want to see the charity do well. I’ve seen a lot of changes, and the charity survived and thrived after lockdown. There are big plans ahead and I am really excited about the future.” Read the full story below.
