Google’s API documents were recently leaked online, giving more insight into how the algorithm works than we ever knew before. The leak caused a bit of a stir amongst digital marketers online — and it seems like everyone has their own opinion. Here are our key takeaways: 💡 User intention is key …and content and links are “secondary”, according to Rand Fishkin. Creating helpful content for your audience instead of algorithms will naturally drive clicks and engagement from your users, which is what will impact rankings. ✍ Authors are an explicit feature As highlighted by Michael King, Google looks at the authorship of pages. Building your influence online as an author may have a bigger impact than E-E-A-T content. 📄 Page titles are still important Pointed out by King, the titlematchScore measures how well a page titles matches a query, which Google gives value to. Optimizing your titles can help with improving your rankings — but there is no character limit! 👩💻 NavBoost ranks clicks as metrics Bad, good, last longest, unsquashed, and unsquashed last longest clicks are all considered metrics, as part of a NavBoost module. Clicks and engagement metrics are also counted both during and after main queries — so any initial queries will receive a boost in SERPs for changed queries.
