Providing free real-hair wigs for children & young people + funding research for better treatments for childhood cancers

About us

The Little Princess Trust is a charity based in Hereford, supplying real hair wigs free of charge to children and young people who have lost their own hair through cancer treatment and other medical conditions. Started in 2006 in memory of 5-year-old Hannah Tarplee who sadly lost her own battle with cancer the previous year, the charity helps those with cancer - up to the age of 24 - with as many wigs as necessary for the duration of their treatment and hair loss. For those aged up to 24 with hair loss due to other conditions the charity also provides free wigs when possible, to help with the associated trauma.
Since its inception, the Trust has given away 10000 wigs; a number which increases every day. The charity also funds research into the provision of innovative and less aggressive and less toxic childhood cancer treatments. The Trust receives thousands of donations of good condition hair from all over the world, which are then used to make wigs. Around 14 hair donations are required to make a single wig. Although the charity can accept a minimum hair donation of 7”/17cm in length, the greatest demand is for hair that is over 12”/30cm which will naturally make much longer wigs. From receiving hair donations at our office, through to fitting and styling a bespoke wig, it costs the charity from £550 to provide a real-hair wig free-of-charge, to our wig recipients. We currently supply over 150 wigs every month. The Little Princess Trust needs financial donations as well as hair donations, in order to fund the actual manufacturing of the wigs and wig-fitting service.

We're continuing to chip away at trying to understand inflammation around bile ducts in rare liver diseases. Thanks to some generous funding from The Little Princess Trust I'm studying a genetic form of cholestasis and how it can lead to early liver cancer. Here's a picture showing bile ducts (pink), scarring cells (green), and inflammatory cells (yellow). I don't have any good answers yet but we're generating lots of ideas.

  • Today we held another of our Salon Training Days, welcoming a lovely group of our wig fitters from across the country to our HQ here in Hereford ✨ As with every training day we host, attendees heard more about our continuing work here at LPT, met our lovely Wig Referrals Team, and even had a go at some wig knotting! We love welcoming our wig fitters to The Hannah Tarplee Building - we always want to remind them of the vital role they play in our wig provision service, and how we couldn’t achieve our mission without them 💜👑

  • Making the process of receiving a wig as quick and straightforward as possible is so important to us here at LPT 👑 We know that our wig recipients and their families can have lots going on at the time when they request their wig, so feedback like this from the parents of our wig recipients means so much 💜 To find out more on requesting a wig for you or someone you know, head to the link here 👉 https://lnkd.in/ebW7y-TN

  • LPT history has been made - this week, we received our first ever hair donation, all the way from Antarctica! 💜❄️ Four researchers, based at Rothera Research Station, have donated their hair to us - all whilst monitoring how our world works and how it responds to our ever changing climate. Jo, who is the Rothera science co-ordinator and meteorologist, organised the charity haircuts with three of her colleagues. She told us, “I have often worked with children in youth groups, nurseries and schools. I have also seen children struggling with medical conditions outside of their control that can be really difficult to deal with, whilst also just trying to fit in, make friends and have fun! The Little Princess Trust helps make this process easier for many children that are going through some incredibly difficult times”. We’re so grateful for this amazing team and their dedication, all the way from their colder climate - it really is amazing to see how far across the globe our SuperHairoes span! ✨

  • This morning, some of the LPT team have been switching up their everyday roles for something a little more hands on ✨ Holly and Kimberley, two of our in-house wig knotters spent time showing some of our staff how wigs are knotted, and the intricate detail that goes into crafting our wigs, strand by strand. As a team, it’s so important that we have knowledge on the process of our wig making, and what makes them so versatile and special. Having this knowledge means we can share these details with you, our wonderful supporters! 💜

  • Funky Hair Funday has gone international! 🥳 St Peter’s International School in Portugal raised a whopping £831 for us when children styled their hair - and heads - and learned all about the work of The Little Princess Trust. Our Funky Hair Funday’s celebrate style, identity and imagination – and can be enjoyed by anyone, no matter their hair length 💜 Find out more on hosting your own Funky Hair Funday via the link here 👉 https://lnkd.in/eVeCWm8x
