About us

We're the Students' Union for over 20,000 students who attend the University of Liverpool. It's our job to help students get the best out of everything beyond their degree during their University years. Hundreds of students are involved with the Guild in some way every single day - whether it’s to buy tickets to a live music gig, volunteer, campaign, take part in society activity, head off on a Give it a Go trip or buy one of our ever popular burritos for lunch. We're proud to be a democratic organisation and registered charity.

30 years ago a group of teenagers met at the University of Liverpool’s Carnatic Halls of Residence. We studied different subjects, came from different parts of the country, and different backgrounds. By the end of Freshers’ Week, we were all party-partners-in-crime and firm friends. After our first year, we moved into different houses, but stayed close. But our third year saw people drift off on years out and live with different groups. After graduation, most of us moved to Manchester or London, and reconnections were made - there was no big 10 year reunion, because most of us were away travelling. Without social media, we stayed in touch best we could, but travels, jobs and relationships took us all over the world, and it was hard for everyone to stay in contact… Then social media allowed everyone to reconnect and a proper reunion was held to mark 20 years since meeting - we stayed at Carnatic, and partied hard like the good old days. However, due to us being around 40 yo, many couldn’t make it because they were busy having families! But social media continued to allow everyone to stay in better touch, and on Friday we returned to Liverpool for a three-day 30 year reunion. Now we are around the 50 yo mark, we talked as much as we partied. So much has happened - good and bad - to everyone in the past decade, and it was extremely emotional. As someone so aptly said in our group chat, “our minds were blown and hearts full” (I would add livers destroyed!!!) as we looked at old photos, recounted stories, and relived memories from those heady student days by returning to our local campus pub (Cambridge), visited where we used to live post-halls, and the students’ union (emotional for me having spent a year as the President of the Liverpool Guild of Students), plus the bars we used to frequent in town - we didn’t get to sleep till 4am on both nights!!! Those who have managed to stay closely connected through the years experienced a deepening of friendships, and those who lost touch reconnected instantly. What we all knew was how very lucky we were to meet three decades ago, that we all get on the way we always have and always will, that we all still love to drink-dance-party, and how we won’t wait a decade for us all (and those who missed it) to get together again. Thank you Liverpool for being such a vibrant city, our university for bringing us together, and everyone for coming - from the US, Portugal, Singapore, Australia, South Africa, Netherlands, Wales and England - and all the chats, hugs, tears, and dancing. May we continue to stay in touch, continue to succeed and live full lives, enjoy good health and happiness, and reunite again in two years not 10 ❤️ 📸 Us at our halls’ ball in the first year; two snaps from last weekend at our old haunts; and one from our 20 year reunion in 2914.
