The charity for everyday walking. Our mission; to achieve a better walking environment and inspire people to walk more.
About us
We are Living Streets, the UK charity for everyday walking. We want to create a walking nation, free from congested roads and pollution, reducing the risk of preventable illness and social isolation and making walking the natural choice. We believe that a walking nation means progress for everyone. Our ambition is to get people of all generations to enjoy the benefits that this simple act brings and to ensure all our streets are fit for walking. For more than 90 years we’ve been a beacon for walking. In our early days our campaigning led to the UK’s first zebra crossings and speed limits. Now, our campaigns and local projects deliver real change to overcome barriers to walking and our ground breaking initiatives such as the world’s biggest Walk to School campaign encourage millions of people to walk. Progress starts here: one street, one school, one step at a time.

Today we’re asking for your help. Living Streets was able to ride the storm of the pandemic and cost of living crisis due to our reserves, but the future of our campaigns is now at risk. Our wonderful supporters have helped us achieve incredible things that benefit people every day: slower speeds on our roads, more children walking to school, better crossing times. With a government talking about prioritising active travel and a ban on pavement parking, the time to deliver is now. But we need your help to keep up the pressure. Please donate today. Thank you! https://lnkd.in/eHz7Ga7h

“The 20mph speed limit is already saving lives in Wales. The number of people injured on 20 and 30mph roads in the nation fell by almost a third in the final quarter of last year, with six fewer fatalities recorded, meaning that fewer families will be affected by a preventable death." Catherine Woodhead on why Living Streets Cymru is celebrating a year since legislation was introduced to reduce speed limits in Wales. Read the full comment here: https://lnkd.in/emRZbgB9

Living Streets reposted this
An energised, ambitious and passionate room at the House of Commons for the reformed APPG for Cycling and Walking. Dame Sarah Storey shared the societal legacy of a Paralympic Games. This is not just about the village, it’s about seeing what can be achieved and creating communities that are accessible to all. The small black bag held her medals travelling straight from the games, the mission so important! Ed Clancy OBE shared the walking, wheeling and cycling movements in South Yorkshire, the changes and impact for healthier, happier communities. And an ambition to be the healthiest region in England. Chris Boardman CBE talked about why #ActiveTravel is key to public health. But translating it to something that really means something to everyone is part of the challenge: 1 million less GP visits achieved! Rezina Chowdhury CMRS, Lambeth Councillor and Deputy Leader shared their achievements to make Active Travel easier; Healthy Neighbourhoods, Safer Streets, space for children and people. Seeing the barriers and acting on them! Simon Lightwood, Minister for Active Travel, set out the UK Government’s bold ambitions on Active Travel. Healthier, greener, integrated communities. Building on the words recently shared by Louise Haigh, Secretary of State for Transport. It was a privilege to speak on behalf of the Walking and Cycling Alliance (WACA), especially amongst an incredible group of speakers to such an influential room of people. I shared who we are at WACA, our vision, how we can make it a reality and the words of Prof. Chris Whitty at Active City earlier this year, when he shared that Active Travel is the single biggest health intervention that a Government can make. This is an investment in public health, local economies, people, place, environment and communities that future generations will thank us for, and that people can enjoy today, so let’s be bold! It was great to meet so many people there, new and familiar faces, I look forward to working with you to make this a reality.

Fantastic evening at the APPG for Cycling and Walking launch event, where our Chief Executive, Catherine Woodhead spoke on behalf of the Walking and Cycling Alliance. Thank you to Simon Lightwood MP for accepting our greeting card calling for action on pavement parking. You can find out more via the link. It was great to hear Simon's speech about the Government's 'bold and ambitious' plans for walking, wheeling and cycling, along with inspiring words from Chris Boardman CBE, Ed Clancy OBE, Rezina Chowdhury CMRS and - fresh from Paris - Dame Sarah Storey! https://lnkd.in/ec7wFP-Z

"It is incredibly encouraging to hear the transport secretary’s support for active travel... But it is important that walking isn’t left behind in plans." Our Chief Executive, Catherine Woodhead, in today's The Guardian. https://lnkd.in/ebapA6qQ
