The Living Wage is an independent movement of employers who believe a fair day’s work should mean a fair day's pay.

About us

The Living Wage Foundation is the organisation at the heart of the Living Wage movement in the UK. The Living Wage Foundation does three things: Accreditation: We offer accreditation to employers that pay the living wage, or those committed to an agreed timetable of implementation, by awarding the ‘Living Wage Employer’ mark. Intelligence: We provide advice and support to employers implementing the Living Wage including best practice guides; case studies from leading employers; model procurement frameworks; access to specialist legal and HR advice. Influence: We provide a forum for leading employers to publicly back the Living Wage. We work with six Principal Partners, Trust for London, KPMG, Linklaters, Resolution Foundation, Save the Children and Queen Mary University of London, who bring financial and strategic support to the work.

The new real Living Wage rates are out! 🙌 Both the UK and London Living Wage rates have risen to: - £12.60 across the UK - £13.85 in London The increase means a pay-rise for almost half a million workers, and thousands of pounds more for full-time workers earning the real Living Wage, than the Government’s minimum wage. With rising living costs, this has never been more important. The Living Wage Foundation's real Living Wage remains the only independently calculated UK wage rate solely based on the actual cost of living. Over 15,000 accredited Living Wage Employers have voluntarily signed up to pay these new rates, so their employees can continue to meet their everyday needs. Together they’ve secured nearly 3.5bn in extra wages for low paid worker since 2011. Find out more about this year's rates: https://ow.ly/H04a50TNx7p Want to join our growing movement of businesses ensuring work that works for everyone?: https://ow.ly/zCEr50TNwYN #LivingWage #UKwages #LivingWageEmployers #LivingWageAccreditation

🤔 Ever wondered what the difference is between the Government's 'National Living Wage' and the Real Living Wage? Hint - ONLY the real Living Wage rates are based on what people actually need to live. But that's not all, read on to find out the other key ways in which they differ. 📌Unlike the Government’s rate, the real Living Wage is independently calculated by economists at The Resolution Foundation based on the cost of living, accounting for essentials like housing, food and travel, as well as things that allow for a decent standard of living - such as a present for a child’s birthday or school uniform at the start of term. 📌The Government's National Living Wage only applies to workers over the age of 21, whereas the real Living Wage applies to all workers 18 and over. 📌The Government’s rate is the legal minimum that employers must pay which is separate to the real Living Wage which is a voluntary standard based on what it actually costs to live. 📌As of the latest rate increase in October 2024, the real Living Wage stands at £12.60 per hour across the UK and £13.85 per hour in London to reflect the city's higher living costs. The Government's rate doesn't factor in the higher cost of living in the capital. Understanding the difference between the government’s minimum wages and the Living Wage Foundation’s real Living Wage can be confusing, especially since the minimum wage for over 21s was renamed the “National Living Wage” back in 2016. We welcome any increase to the minimum wage so that workers can keep pace with the cost of living, but despite any name changes it is important to note the difference between the two rates. The rates are set differently, have different purposes, and implications for workers and employers. 👉 Despite the huge impact of the Living Wage movement, there are still 3.5 million workers in the UK in low paid and insecure work. With rising rents and prices it's never been more important for employers to go a step beyond to support their staff with a real Living Wage.

    • The real Living Wage is the only UK wage rate solely based on the cost of living. The Government's National Minimum Wage is a % of average earnings. Go a step beyond.

Poverty pay affects every aspect of life, including mental health.  The Living Wage Foundation found that 69% of low-paid workers in London stated low pay negatively impacted their levels of anxiety. Worrying about how you will make this month’s rent or afford groceries means you don’t have peace of mind. It’s not right, and no one should have to live this way. Furthermore, unpredictable hours and insecure jobs prevent people from planning their lives around work. At our #LivingWageWeek event yesterday with the Living Wage Foundation, we challenged attendees to tackle the #LivingHours puzzle, working towards a more stable and secure work pattern for all. Employers can support their workforce's well-being by paying them a real #LivingWage and providing #LivingHours. Together, we can make London a #LivingWageCity. This #LivingWageWeek, Ruan Opie-Meres from our Good Work team sat down with Brett Mendell, the Managing Director of Thomas Kneale & Co Limited, to discuss the importance of paying staff the real Living Wage. Brett was presented with the Advocate of the Year Award by the Living Wage Foundation in July this year and has been a prominent champion of the real Living Wage for years. We were interested in chatting to Brett about the UK retail sector and its reliance on low-paid workers. Brett had a long career in retail and we were keen to hear his reflections about why companies in the sector would benefit from paying their staff fairer wages. We’re continuing to challenge the retail sector to improve, but we need your help. Sign our petition calling on UK retailers to pay the real Living Wage. https://lnkd.in/e7brpAcV

As you may have seen in the #Budget2024, the government announced it is increasing the National Living Wage rates from £11.44 to £12.21 an hour for 21 year olds and over, with a separate minimum wage rate for those aged 18-20 of £10 an hour. These rates come into effect from April 1st 2025. This is welcome news, it will help workers keep pace with the cost of living, particularly as prices remain high. , but important to remember that this is the legal minimum employers must pay — separate to the real Living Wage (Currently £12.60 UK, £13.85 London) which is a voluntary standard and the only wage rate that is solely based on the cost of living. Our movement of over 15,000 UK accredited Living Wage Employers are already going beyond the legal minimum to ensure those who work for them are always paid a real Living Wage, and in so doing, they transform the lives of workers and families. Almost half a million people now receive a vital pay rise through this movement.
