London's Best Airport - Which? 2023

About us

London City Airport (LCY) is London's most central airport, offering passengers safe, careful and speedy journeys to and from the capital. LCY is just a short hop from Canary Wharf, while the City of London can be reached in as little as 20 minutes on the DLR directly from the airport’s own station. The attractions of the West End are only another 10 minutes away. In 2019 we welcomed over 5 million passengers for the first time, many of whom were attracted by our convenient location and uniquely rapid transit through the airport – reaching their gate in under 20 minutes and getting out of the airport in as little as five. A Sustainable Future: Our mission is to fulfil the demands of an ever more connected world, while also improving our surrounding environment, community, and economy. We believe we can become a net zero emission airport by 2030. Given our size, our location and the nature of our route network and operation, we are ideally placed to help shape the next phase of aviation innovation in London and the UK. In 2019 we reached a significant milestone, being rated as Carbon Neutral for the operations we control by the respected Airport Carbon Accreditation programme. We are also working with industry partners like airlines and manufacturers to create an eco-system of collaboration that accelerates progress. Visit: sustainability.londoncityairport.com Serving East London: London City Airport is a major part of the local economy and is one of the largest private employers in Newham. Recognised by the Mayor of London’s Good Work Standard, the airport pays employees at least the London Living Wage and recruits locally. As a long-term contributor to the community, we run a number of programmes to raise aspirations, inspire students and prepare local people for work. In 2019, over 1.5 million people from East London flew to and from London City Airport while our Community Fund donated over £75,000 to 30 local good causes and will do the same in 2020.

This week our CEO Alison FitzGerald hosted the Deputy Mayor of London for Business & Growth Howard Dawber at the airport.   We discussed the important contribution London City Airport makes to the London economy and vital role it plays connecting passengers and businesses with international destinations and the rest of the United Kingdom. We look forward to continuing to work with the Deputy Mayor and Mayor of London on ensuring the Capital is the best place for investment, so local businesses and residents can benefit from access to good jobs and opportunities. We also discussed the importance of sustainable aviation and how through our work with the Green Hydrogen Alliance, we can transition to low carbon flight. https://lnkd.in/eXVxJ9xz

Deputy Mayor of London for Business and Growth

Good to see Alison FitzGerald at London City Airport today. Alison recently became CEO which makes her the first woman top boss of a UK Airport - with due respect to those who have been MDs before now. London City Airport plays an important role in London’s economy, historically as a business focused airport and now providing capacity which wouldn’t be possible elsewhere. It’s also plays a crucial role supporting the fast growing economy of East London from the Olympic Park to Excel London, Canary Wharf and the Square Mile. The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan has been clear that we want to see more sustainable aviation. Part of that is more use of sustainable fuel, younger fleets with more efficient engines, eventually electrification. London City is pushing on all these fronts. At the same time London’s International connectivity is vital to our growth and success as a global trading world city, and as one of the UK and the world’s most important tourist destinations. It’s something consistently championed by the business community and by inward investors, so it plays an important role in London’s growth plan. The challenge will be, that as we grow, we want to see a reduction in overall emissions from aviation and this lays down a gauntlet to the whole aviation industry. London & Partners

We recently completed our inaugural Diversity of Thought internship programme with the University of East London, hosting 4 paid interns for 12 weeks. This follows our MoU with UEL and is part of our commitment to support local students' education and employability. Read their highlights 👇 Ingrid, who studies Business Management, said: “I learned the importance of collaborative work. No department worked solely on its own and seeing how they all interacted was really eye opening. There’s a real sense of being one big team.” Haroon, studying Computing for Business, said: “I loved going Airside and looking at how the Aerodrome and Ops team manage the aircraft stands, inspect the runway and disperse the birds.” Hazeeb, who studies Computer Science, said: "I really enjoyed working on real-life projects. It taught me how to apply theory to practical problems.” Sarah, studying Airline and Airport Management, said: “My favourite part was the Women in Aviation event. It was phenomenal to see the work the airport does with young girls and how hard the students work. It shows these types of events are so valuable.” For more information on the Diversity of Thought Programme, click here: https://lnkd.in/eJzfSh7n
