Lothian is delighted to announce the launch of a partnership with Strut Safe, a volunteer-operated support telephone line offering a friendly voice at the end of the phone for those travelling alone. Strut Safe telephone lines are open on Friday and Saturday evenings between 1900 – 0300 hrs, and on Sundays from 1900 – 0100 hrs. The volunteer-led team stay on the phone with callers until they have arrived safely at their destination, no matter where they are going or where they have come from. Lothian is the first public transport provider in the UK to enter into an official partnership with Strut Safe, and the operator is excited about what this new opportunity may bring for both organisations. We are delighted to announce that Doors Open Day will return in September 2024, this year at our Marine depot! As a result of ongoing works at our Central depot, we have taken the decision to throw open the doors of our Marine garage instead where visitors can take a look behind-the-scenes at operations in this busy location. Marine Garage was opened in December 1962 and had an initial allocation of 130 buses. The garage is located on Marine Gardens, previously a Greyhound Racing track opened in 1932. Before that, the site was a football ground used by Leith Athletic and Edinburgh City. During the Second World War, the site was used for military purposes. Marine was also used as the location for Riversea Buses, a fictional bus company in the CBeebies programme Me Too! Today, Marine is home to approximately 160 buses and more than 400 colleagues including drivers, engineers and a catering team. This afternoon, we hosted our Inspiring Women in Business Lunch featuring Sarah Boyd, Managing Director at Lothian, as our guest speaker. Sarah shared a thoughtful and inspiring glimpse into her business and life journey, covering challenges, how she overcame them, and how they have helped shape her leadership today. We also learned about the focus on people within Lothian Buses and how central this is to the organisation’s success across all areas. A huge thank you to Sarah for joining us and being so open. Thanks to everyone who joined, and of course, to The Scotch Whisky Experience for hosting us.

On Thursday 27 June, representatives from the National Transport Trust alongside Lothian’s Managing Director, Sarah Boyd, unveiled a ‘Red Wheel’ plaque on the exterior of Central Depot in Edinburgh’s Annandale Street.   The Red Wheel Scheme was created by the National Transport Trust in recognition and commemoration of sites of historical importance to transport heritage in the UK.   Built as an industrial hall for the Edinburgh Exhibition Association in 1922, Central was later converted to a depot for Edinburgh Corporation buses in 1926. The garage was extended in 1933, and then again in 1963, and by this time nearly 250 buses operated out of the Central Garage, which still has its very distinctive glass dome roof.   To this day, the building is home to our main city operations. More than 900 colleagues, including drivers, engineers, catering and head office teams, work out of Annandale Street daily. It is also home to our impressive Control Room – the heart of our operation – where all our buses are monitored for timekeeping and a watchful eye is kept over traffic conditions and incidents across the city.
