A huge thank you to the unrivalled Camp Wildfire for inviting Louder Than Words Ltd to host an “In Conversation With” the iconic artist, activist, author, and “Living Sculpture” Daniel Lismore as we continue celebrating a decade of purpose-driven initiatives. Over the last 10 years, Louder Than Words has worked alongside Daniel Lismore and other visionary leaders, reaching over 5 million young people, creating vital access to the arts and the natural world. Camp Wildfire was the perfect setting for ‘Art as Testimony for Change,’ where our founder Myvanwy Evans-Davis and Daniel Lismore dove into the transformative power of art as activism. Our 2023 roundup celebrates the groundbreaking work at Learning through Landscapes the UK’s leading outdoor learning and play charity. Learning through Landscapes flagship outdoor learning project, My School, My Planet has supported children from disadvantaged and low-income families to re-engage with learning since the pandemic. Through connecting pupils with members of their local community, the My School, My Planet project provides children who typically spend the least time in the natural environment with a valuable opportunity to learn about climate change, soil health, and biodiversity, as well as their cultural heritage. Working with members of their local community, pupils respond to the impacts of climate change in their area by making meaningful, environmentally friendly changes to their school grounds for the benefit of local wildlife, as well as the wider school community. Through creating cultural maps of their neighbourhood and sharing cultural knowledge amongst families, faith groups, and community gardens, pupils also learn about their own cultural heritage and that of their local community members. Following a national pilot programme My School, My Planet is currently underway in schools across Walsall and the North West. The programme was developed with the help of the nonprofit organisation Louder Than Words, which specialises in cultural communications. Myvanwy Evans-Davis at Louder Than Words Ltd said: “My School My Planet is a vital project for all pupils and especially those from low socio-economic backgrounds as they navigate the increasingly challenging world they live in. “Our cultural consultancy aims to connect and bring to life the relationship between cultural heritage and natural heritage. “Walsall pupils have been learning outdoors about their local community, their culture and natural environment, this has empowered them and given them a much deeper connection to the planet and their place in it.”

Our 2023 roundup reflects upon the profoundly important work of Award-winning director Andy Mundy-Castle at DocHearts Following a world premiere at Sheffield Doc Fest in June 2023, White Nanny Black Child had a UK theatrical release + Q&A at Ritzy Picturehouse Brixton in October, before its TV premiere on Channel 5 on 3rd October 2023. White Nanny Black Child presents a personal, moving and sometimes unsettling meditation on identity, belonging and the nature of family. In this 78 min feature documentary a group of adults share their experiences of growing up as children of Black Nigerian immigrants who were fostered by white British families. Between 1955 and 1995, over 70,000 West African children were fostered by white Britons, in a practice known as ‘farming’. Many individuals then had to live, often in silence, with the long-lasting impact of this controversial official policy. Made in loving memory of acclaimed Brixton artist, Mercury Prize nominated Ty Chijioke, the White Nanny Black Child BAFTA-nominated director, Andy Mundy-Castle said: “The idea to make this film came to me around 2018 when a handful of friends shared that they had gone through this private fostering experience during childhood, which led me to a deep dive in research on the phenomenon. One of the people that I spoke to was the late music artist Ty Chijioke who went to my secondary school and was a friend of my older brother. I began making this film with Ty and unfortunately he passed away during the pandemic, which was incredibly tough for the production and almost halted everything. I’m glad to say that it didn’t and Ty’s legacy will live on as the film is made in his memory.” Filmed over 6 days inside a stately home, nine participants, under professional guidance, discuss their experiences. Delving into their past and revealing confusion and trauma. For many, this marks the first time they have had the opportunity to connect with others who share a similar childhood.

Our 2023 roundup includes YVONNE HERCULES much anticipated return with the release of her second EP ‘Olive’ Supported by Arts Council England, Hercules title track is inspired by Black British civil rights activist Olive Morris, the new EP is a collection of five tracks that included a recent single ‘Narla’s Song’, a bluesy, melancholy sonic treasure of vocals and poignant songwriting which explored the notions of loss and grief. ‘Olive’, saw Hercules create work centred on the narratives and experiences of Black women and Black femininity. Fuelled by her own experiences as a Black woman and creative, and inspired by Alternative Folk/Soul, Jazz and Rock, the indie-folk vocalist, composer and multi-instrumentalist has sought to showcase a body of work that she feels truly represents the nuances of her experiences and those of the Black women in her life and around her. Produced by multi-instrumentalist/producer Malcolm McCarthy, ‘Olive’ follows up Hercules’s critically acclaimed singles ‘Roving’ (2017), ‘Nene’ (2022) and five-track EP ‘Gladiolus’ (2018). Hercules said: “I remember coming across Olive Morris by chance as I stumbled upon a piece about her life and work as an activist. I felt disappointed and a sense of loss that as a young Black girl, who needed to hear stories about impactful Black British women like Morris, nobody had ever mentioned her name. “That particular connection to Olive Morris was even stronger, because I remembered when I was young I used to be called ‘Olive’, so in that moment, I felt that the significance of her life and activism needed to be remembered. “Olive is centred in Black femininity because I was frustrated by my experiences as a Black woman and creative, who has too often been made to feel my experiences should be minimised within a binary definition, and consequently how I present myself and the music I create has been impacted.”
