The five-day working week has been the norm in most countries for around 100 years. But the world of work has been transformed during that time and we’re much more productive now than we were a century ago. Given this, would we all be better off moving to a four-day work week, writes Joe Ryle, Director of the 4 Day Week Campaign? Read Joe’s argument in our latest blog post. Last Tuesday, the Latin America and Caribbean Inequality Review (LACIR) hosted an event led by Francisco Ferreira on Latin America’s inequality crisis, with experts sharing insights and solutions: 📊 Valentina Contreras outlined that the top 1% controls 37–40% of the wealth, while the bottom half holds almost none. Inequality is severe, intergenerational, and enduring. 📈 Julian Messina examined how market power affects inequality, suggesting that policies promoting growth and business efficiency could foster fairness. 💡 Andrés Velasco reviewed income distribution strategies, stressing three approaches: predistribution, distribution, and redistribution. 🌱 Sebastian Nieto Parra focused on reducing inequality through formal employment, especially among young people, and highlighted green economy opportunities if supported by proper training. Watch the event here: https://lnkd.in/dBUBdpqP Thanks to our panelists and attendees. Let’s keep pushing for a fairer Latin America! 🤝 #Inequality #LatinAmerica #PublicPolicy #GreenEconomy

In her first Budget as the UK’s Chancellor of the Exchequer, Rachel Reeves announced some progressive changes to taxation and government spending plans. But how well did she score from the standpoint of addressing the UK’s gaping inequalities? Faiza Shaheen, Distinguished Policy Fellow at the International Inequalities Institute, comments in our latest blog post. #LSEInequalitiesBlog

📢 Ahead of the Autumn Budget, new research by CenTax shows that the Treasury could raise up to £1bn next year by taxing profits earned by private equity executives as income. They estimate that taxing gains at 45 per cent would only amount to a 16 per cent reduction in the take-home pay of the industry’s top 100 dealmakers. The gap between rich and poor in the UK continues to get wider and wider. As well as being grossly unfair, argues Will Snell of the Fairness Foundation, the sheer size of the wealth gap poses major risks to our economy, our society, our democracy and our environment. Indeed, wealth inequality is a significant driver of strategic risk to the UK *as a whole* - and this risk is seriously underpriced by politicians and commentators alike. How should policymakers respond? #LSEInequalitiesBlog
The UK’s wealth gap has grown by 50% in eight years – and poses a strategic risk to the nation

This UK #BlackHistoryMonth, we are highlighting our digital storytelling project - 'It’s more than money: telling the story of racial wealth divides in the UK and South Africa'. This project, a part of our Wealth Elite and Tax Justice research programme and cofunded by LSE EDI, draws together original research, bodies of critical scholarship, and oft-silenced voices exploring the nature and experience of entrenched racial wealth divides. Beyond the accumulation of money and assets, what is wealth? And why do racial wealth divides matter? https://ow.ly/lMJz50TSpHa
