Monitoring can give valuable insight into the condition of a structure, helping to inform whether there is an urgent need for maintenance works, or if they can be scheduled instead. This was the case for Merstham Viaduct, part of the M25 network, when questions were raised over whether the bridge bearings had fused solid. Through the use of our structural monitoring equipment, Octavius Infrastructure were able to ascertain that there was no immediate need for works to be completed and instead focus on planning scheduled works. With much of the UK's rail infrastructure located in crowded city centres or underground, working on these types of projects can be especially challenging. Our monitoring and jacking capabilities were called upon by Dragados UK & Ireland, when they were appointed to carry out the Bank Station Capacity Upgrade. Due to the site's close proximity to a multi-storey building with a full glass facade, movement of even one-and-a-half millimetres could jeopardise the glass exterior. Originally constructed in the 1960s, Barton High Level Bridge in Manchester was widened in 1989 to create an additional lane of traffic in each direction. After recent monitoring of the tolerances, it was revealed that the piers were either at or beyond their limit, with this discovery triggering the need for corrective works to be performed. Here, we worked closely with Balvac Ltd and supplied a bespoke monitoring and jacking system, ensuring the bridge piers were kept within tolerance throughout the duration of the works.
