As things stand, Trump is closing in on victory. Many - including the media - will look to see how markets react. Markets going up, or down, on any particular day is not far from a coin toss 🪙 The most effective way to avoid disappointment is simply to look at your portfolio value less frequently. This graphic shows demonstrates the chance of seeing a positive return (US markets) since 1994. ‘𝘓𝘰𝘰𝘬 𝘢𝘵 𝘺𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘴𝘵𝘰𝘤𝘬𝘴 𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘺 10 𝘺𝘦𝘢𝘳𝘴, 𝘺𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘣𝘰𝘯𝘥𝘴 𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘺 𝘧𝘦𝘸, 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘺𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘤𝘢𝘴𝘩 𝘥𝘢𝘪𝘭𝘺, 𝘪𝘧 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘩𝘢𝘷𝘦 𝘵𝘰’ - Anon.

U.S. presidents come and go, each bringing unique policies and viewpoints. Yet, if history has shown us anything, it’s that the markets have an impressive ability to adapt and persevere. While no single leader or administration can predict market directions with certainty, early signs indicate Trump may once again hold the presidency. Still, markets are shaped by a complex web of factors, making it challenging to time investments around political shifts or short-term events. As news cycles evolve, the core principles of long-term investing remain steady. Credit to Albion Strategic Consulting for the chart below.

What an incredible journey for The Levelheaded Investor and the GAIA team - engaging with such esteemed firms in Sydney and gaining insights from Gerard O'Reilly. Looking forward to hearing about the Cairns and Cape Tribulation leg of the trip...!

The Levelheaded Investor Heads Home (The Long Way Round) After a memorable trip across 🇳🇿 New Zealand, the Levelheaded Investor (LHI) took its first 🇦🇺 Australian detour via Sydney, where myself and some GAIA colleagues had the privilege of engaging with five outstanding financial advisory firms. They generously opened their doors and shared invaluable insights into their businesses. These firms were: 👉 Lorica Partners  👉 William Buck  👉 Via Financial Group  👉 Stanford Brown (📷 photo of LHI looking South) 👉 Lipman Burgon In Sydney, we were also hosted by Dimensional Fund Advisors, where we had an insightful conversation with Dimensional's Co-CEO & Co-CIO, Gerard O’Reilly. The view from their office was nothing short of spectacular, offering a perfect backdrop of Sydney Harbour and the Opera House - 📷 first LHI photo opportunity. It just so happened that Dimensional was preparing for a webcast with Professor Robert Novy-Marx, whose work on the profitability investment factor is one of the six core factors featured in The Levelheaded Investor. A perfect moment for the 📷 second photo opportunity! The next leg of the journey took us to Cairns and Cape Tribulation—more to come on that part of the adventure. 📈 If you want to understand how harnessing the profitability factor can enhance your investment portfolio order your copy of 📖 The Levelheaded Investor from Amazon: https://t.ly/yO5Ix #TheLevelheadedInvestor #LoricaPartners #WilliamBuck #ViaFinancialGroup #StanfordBrown #LipmanBurgon

There’s nothing like a little October team bonding to keep the spirits high! Last week, a few of the Magus Wealth team gathered at Sixes in Brighton for a fantastic night of cricket with a twist. With plenty of laughs, a few spins, and a couple of yorkers, we enjoyed some friendly play—no LBWs, thankfully! The evening was complete with drinks, nibbles, and a chance to unwind and connect as a team. #TeamBuilding #MagusWealth #CricketFun #LifeAtMagus

Over your lifetime, tectonic plate movement might shift your position on Earth by a metre or two—a geologic marvel, but one that leaves little impact on your day-to-day life. In contrast, compound interest has the potential to create true financial "mountains”.

Did the Earth Move for You? A Journey Through Tectonic Plates and Compound Interest     Imagine you're on a train in New Zealand's Southern Alps. As you climb higher, you cross an invisible line where two massive tectonic plates meet. It's an exciting moment for geology enthusiasts, but most people wouldn't even notice.     Now, what if I told you this geological phenomenon has some surprising similarities with something that affects us all: compound interest?     The Slow Dance of Earth and Money     Tectonic plates and compound interest are more alike than you might think:     • They both move slowly, almost unnoticeably at first  • Their effects are unstoppable and far-reaching  • Given enough time, both create amazing results     The key difference? Tectonic plates will shift whether we pay attention or not, but compound interest needs us to take action.     The Eighth Wonder of the World     Albert Einstein reportedly called compound interest the eighth wonder of the world. Like the slow formation of mountain ranges, it works its magic over time, turning small, regular investments into impressive financial peaks.     But here's the catch: unlike the earth's crust, which moves on its own, compound interest needs us to get it started.     Time: Your Greatest Ally (or Missed Opportunity)     The secret to making compound interest work for you is time. Just as the Southern Alps weren't created overnight, your financial growth needs years to reach its full potential.     Putting off investing can cost you significantly. Every year you wait is a year of potential growth lost – a sobering thought for those not yet investing.     A Metre or a Mountain?     Over your lifetime, tectonic plate movement might shift your position on Earth by a metre or two. That's impressive geologically, but it won't change your life much.     Compound interest, however, can create financial mountains. The question is: are you ready to start your journey?     Are you letting this financial wonder work for you, or are you just watching it go by like scenery from a train window? 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐒𝐭𝐨𝐜𝐤 𝐏𝐢𝐜𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 #InvestmentIntel 🎯 Why is picking stocks so difficult? 🤔 A few key concepts stand out. One is the idea that markets already reflect known information. Positive news about AI and NVIDIA chips? Priced in. Developments in electric vehicles and Tesla sales? Priced in. Climate concerns impacting oil stocks? Priced in. You get the idea! Second, stock price movements are random and unpredictable. As Burton Malkiel explains in his must-read “𝘈 𝘙𝘢𝘯𝘥𝘰𝘮 𝘞𝘢𝘭𝘬 𝘋𝘰𝘸𝘯 𝘞𝘢𝘭𝘭 𝘚𝘵𝘳𝘦𝘦𝘵”, trying to beat the market can often be a luck-based—and costly—exercise. 📈📉❓ 🔗 https://lnkd.in/eTcNy4j8 Then there’s the remarkable research by Hendrik Bessembinder, who found that only 4% of stocks were responsible for all of the U.S. market’s net wealth creation between 1926 and 2016. In other words, long-term growth is driven by a handful of superstar stocks, while most underperform or disappear. 🪄 🔗 https://lnkd.in/eEZCJuaS Some view Bessembinder’s findings as a reason to try and identify those few superstar stocks. But given the earlier points about information efficiency and randomness, that’s an extremely challenging task with the odds stacked against you. Others see it as a strong case for accepting market prices, diversifying broadly across the entire market, and remembering that most individual stocks deliver suboptimal returns over the long run. #Investing #Markets #Diversification #Bessembinder #Malkiel __________________________ The chart below illustrates Bessembinder’s point. Even over a shorter period, the effect is evident. Looking at the 5-year returns of 10,000 listed global large, mid, and small-cap stocks from 10/19 to 09/24, fewer than 1 in 5 outperformed the market, while more than half of the stocks either delisted or showed negative growth.

    • The challenge of picking stocks, demonstrated by 5-year annualised returns of 10,000 stocks against the market to September 2024.
