These pauses are not just about relaxation but about returning to my work with fresh energy and creativity. What do we love about Kate Matthews? Her approach - rooted in #curiosity, #kindness, and continuous #learning, which inspires us all to make a difference, one small action at a time. Currently VP of DE&I at bp, Kate has many years of HR experience and worked in Telecoms and Financial Services before moving to the energy sector in 2020. Here's her take: #Q1: What do you see as the biggest opportunities that organisations can take right now and how do you suggest they leverage this? #A1: "Given the shifting and uncertain nature of social discourse I think organisations have the opportunity to create safe spaces for employees to explore difficult and challenging topics. Building this capability would enable bolder commercial conversations around areas of risk and opportunity, as well as more sensitive areas of social discourse. This would improve business outcomes and employee psychological safety both at work and beyond, having positive knock-on impact in society more widely." Please don’t underestimate your ability to help during these times. You absolutely have the ability to be a source of comfort and encouragement. You may not have all the answers or all the solutions, none of us do. But you can help to take the pressure off. As a manager and colleague you can listen, show empathy, make time for conversation, support flexible and remote working, share resources, support the staff networks, move around deadlines and be an open ear. This is, in part, the solution. Leading with love, hope and empathy is what the people around you need right now, especially your Black and Brown colleagues. Last week we celebrated #International Day of the World's #Indigenous People. This year's theme, ‘Protecting the Rights of Indigenous Peoples in Voluntary Isolation and Initial Contact,’ reminds us of the incredible cultures and traditions of these communities who live in harmony with nature. Around 200 groups, living in remote forests, preserve their #cultures and #languages through gathering and hunting. Their way of life depends on their natural environment, and any disruption can threaten their survival. Despite their right to autonomy, they face challenges from deforestation, disease, and external development pressures. Let's celebrate their rich heritage and commit to protecting their #rights.
