Today we celebrate Una Marson as she is honoured with a plaque for her contributions to broadcasting and advocacy 🖤 She became the first Black woman to be employed by the BBC, during World War II. In 1942, she became producer of the programme 'Calling the West Indies', turning it into 'Caribbean Voices', which became an important forum for Caribbean literary work. The Una Marson Library was opened by Southwark Council near the South London in February 2024 as part of the redevelopment of the Aylesbury Estate in South London, recognising Marson as a "local hero". #UnaMarson #CaribbeanVoices #BBCHistory #BlackHistory #WomenInMedia #BroadcastingLegends #CaribbeanCulture

On Wednesday our CEO Timi Okuwa attended the Change the Race Ratio and Parker Review Parliamentary reception. The event discussed increasing racial and ethnic minority representation on Boards and in Leadership teams of the UK’s largest companies. Discussions included how to increase representation, particularly Black representation in these companies at a senior level, and why increasing diversity in companies is beneficial to the company itself. ➡️ Top quartile businesses of the most diverse executive teams are 39% more profitable than bottom quartile businesses ➡️ Lack of ethnic diversity in business is costing the UK £24bn a year in lost GDP. A special shout out to Nathan Coe, CEO of AutoTrader for prioritising DEI work in his company and setting an example for other big corporations. #DiversityAndInclusion #Leadership #ChangeTheRaceRatio #BoardDiversity #CorporateLeadership #DiversityMatters #InclusionInBusiness

We are committed to advancing justice and equality across six key pillar areas: Education, Economic Empowerment, Health, Justice, Immigration and Rights, Culture Awareness and Representation, and Housing. Our work is grounded in evidence-based practices, using the power of data to assess and address issues of disproportionality impacting Black communities. In line with our mission, we are seeking to create a pool of Black researchers interested in contributing to our various research projects across these pillars. These projects will focus on critical issues that affect Black communities and demand nuanced, data-driven insights. We are looking for researchers with expertise in the following areas: ➡️Methodologies: Experience in qualitative and quantitative research methodologies, including but not limited to mixed methods, data analysis, case studies, and surveys. ➡️Thematic Areas: A deep understanding of the challenges and opportunities within the core pillar areas, especially those affecting Black communities. This includes familiarity with systemic inequalities, public policy, and community-led initiatives. ➡️Expertise: Scholars with academic or professional experience in one or more of the following areas: racial justice, policy analysis, community development, health disparities, criminal justice reform, economic inequality, or cultural studies. If you are interested in collaborating with BEO on projects that will help shape policies, improve Black communities’ outcomes, and challenge systemic barriers, we invite you to join our research pool. Please send your CV, along with a brief overview of your research accomplishments, methodologies, and any relevant expertise, to us at recruitment@blackequityorg.com. #RecruitmentforResearchers #BlackResearchers #RacialJustice #DataDriven #CommunityDevelopment #BlackEquity #SocialJustice

Under new guidance by the Sentencing Council magistrates and judges would be asked to consult a pre-sentence report before determining whether to imprison someone of an ethnic or religious minority as well as young adults, abuse survivors and pregnant women. This move is aimed at tackling racial, religious, and other bias and reducing reoffending. Government ministers are vocalising their disagreement to this new guidance, including Justice Secretary Shabana Mahmood, however, we encourage ministers to examine why this guidance is a step forward in judicial equity and equality. Currently, Black and minority ethnic communities are overrepresented at every stage of the criminal justice process and are more likely to be imprisoned and receive longer sentences than white counterparts. Black male offenders had an average custodial sentencing length of 28.3 months, whilst white male sentencing on average was 21.8 months. The new guidance which comes into force on 1st April, is a step forward. #CriminalJusticeReform #SentencingGuidelines #SocialJustice #EquityInJustice #RacialBias #LegalReform #CriminalJusticeSystem
