We welcome the Government's review of the water sector. It is important this considers the structural challenges within the business water market that can only be tackled via legislative changes to the Water Industry Act. These include, among other areas, the creation a robust mechanism to protect businesses if their retailer fails financially and a more agile process to change the market's codes.

MOSL CEO Sarah McMath comments on the Government’s Industrial Strategy Green Paper published last week: “The word 'water' was notably absent. While we welcome the emphasis on enabling infrastructure, water availability needs to be a primary consideration if the Government's industrial and economic growth ambitions are to be met. We are already seeing new or expanded water supplies turned down for businesses in areas of East and South East England. Ensuring joined up thinking across departments to meet growth, net zero and water security ambitions is one of our key asks of government.” You can read the Invest 2035 strategy here: https://bit.ly/3UgSdQc Read our other key government asks here: https://bit.ly/4fhVCY1

The 210 highest-consuming water supply points account for 20% of consumption in the business water market - that's 7% of all of England's drinking water! If these 210 supply points were to use non-potable water where possible, for example, through rainwater capture, they could minimise their impact on the environment.
