Through the distribution of small 'comfort grants', the NewstrAid team are doing their bit to ensure that 'everyone stays warm this winter'. Yesterday's PPA Sustainability Action Group Meeting delivered a strong line-up of speakers, sharing information and case studies on both recent and upcoming regulatory change, best practice measurement tools and the next steps for the publishing industry. Representatives from Future's ESG team and Marketforce's Production, Supply Chain/Logistics and Commercial Development teams were in attendance - each taking a raft of learnings back to the business within their respective areas. The PPA’s Sustainability Action Group meets regularly to drive the agenda on sustainability in our sector. Today we heard the latest on EU deforestation regulation from Margherita Miceli, Cepi; an excellent case study on sustainable events from Gary Charlton, Haymarket Media Group; how the Fins are decarbonising the Finnish Media Industry, courtesy of Suvi Oinonen of Graafinen Teollisuus ry - Federation of the Printing Industry in Finland; as well as an update on the PPA’s own Net Zero Pathway initiative. Some great initiatives across our industry and Europe, showing a sector making important strides to net zero. I’ve now worked at Marketforce on Future Bookazines for two years and three weeks, and I’ve been lucky enough to be a part of coming up with new ideas for products, including writing on some of the bookazines as part of my role, but nothing has been as incredible as this for me, my career, and for my personal identity too. As one of those annoying OG fans of the iconic Chappell Roan, I’ve been ecstatic to watch her become the biggest artist in the world as an out and proud lesbian this year. For me in my personal life, this year has been one of learning that there’s a massive way to go for LGBTQ+ rights, so to see lesbian representation in the music industry has been no small thing. I think back to when I was young and getting my magazine subscriptions; sticking my posters up on the wall, and devouring articles about my favourite artists, and how little of my favourite artists were queer, or had anything to do with the community. I’m now working in the magazine publishing industry, and this year I got the opportunity to push for an artist that I’m obsessed with: for the childhood me who desperately wanted lesbian representation in the media. On the 3rd of October, I got to see a publication that represents ME, by a massive publisher that I get to work for. I got to be involved in the set up; distribution; promotion and even writing of something that I and so many other fans across the world will feel so passionate about. This is more than just your average bookazine release, it’s providing young queer people across the world with the representation that I so desperately wanted growing up, and I’m so excited to be a part of that. LEGO Magazines made up for half of the 40 million play-focussed titles sold every year but they rarely feature in discussions about reading.
