Take a moment out of your day to read the messages on our tents and consider the reality facing our clients - we can’t and won’t celebrate our 50th birthday until the people we support can celebrate theirs. Incredibly powerful and important campaign from the Porchlight (charity) communications team. Big thanks to Alex Nurse, Kim Hill, Kerry Little, Chris Thomas, Sophie Baker, Deborah Caplan, Eleanor Sheath, Helen Read, and all the fantastic staff and volunteers who have helped take our campaign around Kent.

Today in windy Margate, we continued our journey across the county, sharing why, instead of celebrating our 50th anniversary, we’re taking to the streets of Kent to raise awareness of the deadly realities of homelessness. The public response has been incredible. People have stopped to read the messages on our tents, taken photos, and asked about Porchlight - our history, the work we do and ways to get involved. We’ll be back in Margate tomorrow and in Folkestone on Friday. If you see us, do come and say hi - we’re a friendly bunch!

"I will never forgot the scream we heard when we called the HR manager the following day and told her what had happened to Richard" It was back in September 2021, when I first communicated with Richard's mum and she told me how he had taken his own life after he had been told he was being suspended from work. "Richard was the person other colleagues went to for advice and support. Hence, his employer gave no thought to the impact of the suspension on his mental health." He left the office as instructed, went straight to his flat, left out his will and letters for his family and took a train to a bridge and ended his life. He texted his mother at 10.30pm to say he loved her. The first she knew of his suicide decision was when police arrived at their front door at 11.30 pm that night. Another family devastated by one of the most preventable deaths in society and a lesson to companies about the impact their policies and procedures can have on the wellbeing of their employees. Richard's suicide would also have had a huge affect on those he worked with and tomorrow, in York, I will be delivering a talk at The Northern Workplace Bereavement and Loss Conference, hosted by Workplace Bereavement: https://lnkd.in/eMCKGNGc During my talk, I will be sharing that out of a UK workforce of 33 million people, every day, 40,000 employees consider suicide, according to research undertaken by Champion Health. I will be asking the question; 'Is your company zero suicide tolerant?' and explaining what this means. I will also be sharing advice on how your company should be prepared, should the unthinkable happen and a colleague takes their own life. There are other excellent speakers at the conference tomorrow and although most tickets are probably sold, there may be one or two still available by checking the Eventbrite booking page: https://lnkd.in/eMCKGNGc Suicide is the biggest killer of men under 50 and of men and women under 35. How well trained and prepared is your organisation should such an event happen on your watch? #suicideprevention #zerosuicidesociety

Why don’t we see poverty and debt as a trauma? Why don’t we talk about ‘financial trauma’? I was working on a TV programme back in 2022, and talking to the producer about trauma. I gave an example of someone living in poverty, not knowing where the next meal is coming from, worrying about debts & bailiffs, about homelessness - and I used the term ‘financial trauma’. She stopped me and said, ‘I’ve never heard anyone say that you could suffer from trauma from financial issues, but it makes sense. Mainly they just talk about mental health issues.’ She’s right. We only talk about psychological trauma within the medical parameters of ‘mental illness’ and ‘disorder’, instead of financial trauma, poverty, debt, and oppression being recognised, people are told they have mental health issues or need to seek mental health support. This means we don’t look at the structures and environments that people are in when they are struggling, and instead pathologise the individual mind. We do already talk about economic abuse (see Surviving Economic Abuse) and oppression, for example - so it would make sense that what comes from that is financial trauma, not a mental health issue or disorder of the mind. And so I thought I would use this space to say the following: It is not a mental disorder to struggle and not to be able to cope with money worries, debt, eviction, homelessness, economic abuse, financial exploitation and extortion. It is traumatic and distressing to live in constant financial worry. It is scary to be being chased by bailiffs. It is terrifying to worry about losing your home or your possessions. It is a long term, chronic, complex form of trauma. It is likely, (and totally normal) that you would become ill, tired, low, scared, angry, hopeless, helpless, and disillusioned. It is likely that you would start to feel like you are losing control, or that you want to escape. These are normal responses. They are not disorders. Secondly, for those of you who grew up or had a period of life where you were in poverty or homeless, you will notice that you developed coping mechanisms and behaviours that stick with you to this day. It might be that you stockpile food. It might be that you watch money closely, almost becoming obsessive about spending or saving. It might be that you never treat yourself to anything, or you feel guilty when you spend anything on yourself. You might deny yourself food or basic needs. Financial trauma is real. Your responses are valid. Before you accept labels and disorders, consider if you are actually living in constant worry, distress, and trauma from money worries. ❤️
