Media Cymru recently dropped a completely essential report. If you're not familiar, they're a Welsh group trying to get to the heart of news avoidance and understand what journalism can do about it. Unlike a lot of projects, they start from a very important place: They believe people avoiding news are intelligent people who care deeply about their communities and the world, and those people are making an entirely rational decision to reject a service that doesn't actually serve them. Because of that, people open up about how journalism has ignored, misunderstood, or misrepresented them. They describe in personal detail why they feel the current journalism landscape as they see it isn't for them. And Media Cymru respects them. That's something every news outlet and journalist needs to do. Now. Because that's also the key to unlocking what can actually be done to turn journalism into the public service it must be — a mission that centers community strength and collective assets over ceaselessly listing the ills of the world. Behind critiques of the industry also rests a deep hope that we can do better and insightful ideas about what that might look like. Thanks to Shirish Kulkarni for sharing the report with us and with the world. We tried to pick a few choice quotes, but everyone should look at the full report. Even if they didn't speak to you, you might see yourself in there. 🙂 https://lnkd.in/gwT3mueu
