Chat GPT surpassed Bing's traffic in August. It's also the biggest AI Chatbot by traffic - by a long shot. Forecast: growing. Chat GPT is still far away from Google, but the fact that it took "AI" less than 2 years to overtake the 3rd largest search engine in the world (2nd: Youtube) means it's more than just hype, as originally assumed. WSJ found that 17% of consumers use Chat GPT as a replacement for search. I use it all the time, and so do many people I speak to. The hype is real. Literally.

We've been tracking quarterly global revenue of public media and platform companies to monitor the #revenuegap and #competitiongap between platform and media/publishing companies as it's clear these are two segments that perform differently. See the interactive graph here and more detailed ones for Mediaspace premium members: https://lnkd.in/dwvT56G5 As also being the founder of a cross-media business intelligence tool, I wonder how we can track reality better to help market and government decision-makers see the transformation of the market based on evidence, and stay ahead of the market to avoid past mistakes of the digital era now, having genAI as significant challenge and opportunity, shaping the media and advertising space. In our Competition Gap Tracker this year we separated the data of gatekeeper online platforms from other online platforms on this visualisation, to follow the segmentation of the EU's new digital regulations (DMA, DSA) for a more nuanced picture. But the real question is how to address and monitor the impact of genAI/searchAI platforms from revenue perspectives (traffic is another topic covered by research and web monitoring companies): ❓ GenAI / SearchAI platforms have Saas business models - how should we add/mix/compare with advertising and content subscription revenues? While 'traditional' search and social platforms like Google and Facebook disrupted the advertising market via 'internal' KPIs like ad revenue, the SaaS model is an 'external' revenue disruption using the professional content of publishers and all content creators - collecting revenues for services like ChatGPT premium that partly depends on content providers' work. ❓ Some companies like Perplexity just launched their ad sale activities - should we add at least those to the database (if we find publically available reliable information)? Yesterday 28 organisations, representing around 65000 businesses and app developers across the world, sent a clear message: gatekeeping app stores and mobile ecosystems like #Apple are actively circumventing the #DigitalMarketsAct (#DMA), resisting compliance and thwarting innovation. The letter was sent ahead of the confirmation hearings of the designated members of the new European Commission (4-12 November). The signatories call on Members of the European Parliament and of the European Commission to ensure that the EU remains fully committed to strong and effective enforcement of the DMA. Commissioners-designate Henna Virkkunen and Teresa Ribera have affirmed in their written answers to MEPs that they are committed to "vigorous" enforcement, particularly in relation to "closed ecosystems". This is encouraging, and we hope it will translate into concrete measures which lead #gatekeepers to comply with the spirit and letter of the law. We are far from that point. For instance, Apple's compliance plan is designed to perpetuate their anticompetitive practices, such as imposing unjustified fees, discriminating among developers, and preventing them from offering better conditions to consumers.
