At Mednet, we understand the importance of constantly innovating and moving forward. But we also understand the importance of past innovations. This Black History Month, we wanted to share information about some incredible Black healthcare professionals and scientists from recent history. Dr. Patricia Bath (1942–2019) An ophthalmologist, inventor, and laser scientist, Dr. Patricia Bath was the first African American woman to receive a medical patent. She invented the Laserphaco Probe, a device used to treat cataracts, and co-founded the American Institute for the Prevention of Blindness. Bath’s work has helped restore vision to millions globally. Dr. Kizzmekia Corbett (b. 1986) Dr. Kizzmekia Corbett is a viral immunologist whose groundbreaking work on mRNA technology was instrumental in developing the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine. As a key scientist at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), her contributions are credited with saving millions of lives during the pandemic. Corbett is a rising star and role model in the field of immunology. Dr. Charles R. Drew (1904–1950) A pioneering surgeon and researcher, Dr. Charles Drew revolutionised blood banking by developing techniques to improve blood storage. His innovations laid the foundation for modern blood transfusions, saving countless lives. Drew's leadership in establishing blood banks during World War II and his advocacy against racial segregation in blood donation practices made him a trailblazer in both medicine and social justice. Dr. Alexa Canady (b. 1950) In 1981, Dr. Alexa Canady became the first African American woman to become a neurosurgeon in the United States. Specialising in paediatric neurosurgery, Canady focused on treating congenital spine disorders and brain injuries. Her commitment to her young patients and contributions to neurosurgery have left an enduring legacy. Dr. Marilyn Hughes Gaston (b. 1939) Dr. Marilyn Hughes Gaston is known for her ground-breaking research on sickle cell disease. Her work led to nationwide screening programs for new-borns and improved treatment for this genetic condition. As the first Black woman to direct a public health bureau within the U.S. Department of Health, she shaped national healthcare policies. #BlackHistoryMonth

As a Mindful Employer, we understand just how important maintaining good mental health is to helping people achieve their full potential. That's why the theme of this years #WorldMentalHealthDay - Mental Health at Work - is so important to us. We take a look at some of this year's key messages from the World Health Organisation (WHO) and explore some of the ways we're answering those messages all year long. We run regular sessions to raise awareness of mental health issues, and actively employ people who have previously struggled to find employment as a result of their mental health as part of our partnership with Leeds Mind. In doing so, we have built a diverse and supportive workspace that values everyone and provides the support they need to achieve success.

Last week, we ran several events to mark International Happiness at Work Week, culminating in a team meal out on Friday! The week was filled with fun get-togethers and tasks to help improve mental wellbeing at work, including daily meditation sessions to start each day with a clear mind, an online yoga session and a mid-week painting class so that we could relax and exercise our creativity outside of work tasks. As a Mindful Employer, we know how important positive mental wellbeing is to everyone’s happiness at work, and by offering the right kind of support to our teams, we’re helping people achieve a better work-life balance and mental health management. To find out more about our commitment to mental health awareness, check out some of our previous articles on our website: https://lnkd.in/e722bRy8. #WeekOfHappinessAtWork #MindfulEmployer #PositiveWellbeing
