As the seasons begin to change it’s a great time to take a moment and connect with nature. 🍂 Being out in nature can help you reduce your risk of mental health problems, lift your mood and help you feel better about things. It’s not always easy to do, when we’re busy or the weather is bad, or green spaces are inaccessible to us. However, there are small ways we can all connect with nature, that can have a big impact. Over the last couple of weeks, the Mental Health Foundation team travelled across the country to attend party conferences, and took the opportunity to keep on flying the flag for prevention of mental ill-health. New parliaments are always brimming with ideas and opportunities for change, so it felt incredibly valuable to get the chance to attend the conferences to speak to and hear from senior politicians, councillors, and others who have the potential to make those opportunities a reality. We also hosted our own roundtable at the Labour Party Conference, where we discussed our recent report looking at the role local planning plays in prevention. We were delighted that leading politicians and many other leading voices chose to join us to explore this topic. We want to extend a heartfelt thanks to everyone who took the time to chat to us, and we look forward to working with politicians from all parties as we continue our mission to build a country which does everything it can to prevent poor mental health.

We've created new guidance for organisations working with seldom-heard groups on how to be involved in co-producing health economics research. People from seldom-heard groups - individuals who have lived experience of mental health challenges, discrimination, prejudice, or other forms of disadvantage - can benefit greatly from investment to protect their mental health. Yet they are rarely involved in co-producing economic research used to inform policy and practice choices for mental health. This guidance provides suggestions for how civil society organisations can work with health economics researchers to increase the visibility of seldom-heard groups in co-producing health economics research. With World Mental Health Day just a week away, we want to talk about why mental health awareness matters. 📢 Mental health awareness can increase understanding of how to protect mental health and the wide range of issues affecting it, while reducing stigma and discrimination. It also has an important role in influencing policy change to support good mental health. Some people have argued that greater awareness is why we're seeing poorer mental health - but we know this isn't the case. In fact, mental health awareness has been doing a vital role in lifting the lid on the extent of the distress people experience. How will you be taking part in World Mental Health Day and raising mental health awareness this year? Let us know in the comments. Read our blog: https://bit.ly/4eh75q3 #WorldMentalHealthDay #WMHD24

If you're taking part in 'Sober October', did you know that you may experience some mental health benefits? As a depressant, alcohol produces chemical changes in our brains that can lead to negative feelings such as depression, anxiety or anger. 🧠 Our mental health is also influenced by the physical effects of alcohol. For example, alcohol can lead to sleep problems - affecting both our mind and body. 💤 So, if you're looking for a way to improve your mental health - keeping up a low-to-no drinking habits can make a big impact.
