    The next instalment of our ongoing Challenge Hound series is here: having conquered England, America, The Congo, and Australia, we are now heading East to travel across Japan! We'll be logging our virtual miles from Cape Soya, the northernmost point in Japan on the island of Hokkaido, to Cape Sata, the southernmost tip of Kyushu island. So far, we've managed to cover just over 510 miles, which puts us 25% ahead of our target! As always, for every mile that we travel, we will be donating 20p to our selected charities.     Don't Neglect the Basics: A Lesson from Mental Math For the last month, I've been practising basic math questions every morning to sharpen my mental math skills, which have gotten a bit rusty since leaving school in the early '90s. This daily exercise got me thinking about how we often approach sales training. As sales trainers, we tend to focus on advanced techniques and strategies, always looking for the next big thing to give us an edge. However, just like with math, we can't neglect the fundamentals. The Importance of Sales Fundamentals - Mastering the basics, such as active listening, asking the right questions, and understanding customer needs, forms the foundation of sales success. - Even the most advanced techniques will fall flat without a solid grasp of these core skills. - Research shows that salespeople who consistently practice and refine their fundamental skills outperform those who solely rely on advanced tactics. Sharpening Your Sales Skills - Set aside time each day or week to practice active listening and asking open-ended questions. - Role-play with colleagues to hone your ability to uncover customer needs and present solutions. - Regularly review and update your knowledge of your products or services. - Seek feedback from managers, peers, and customers to identify areas for improvement. Just as I'm committed to improving my mental math skills, let's make a commitment to refine our sales fundamentals continually. By doing so, we'll build a strong foundation for success and be better equipped to leverage advanced techniques when the time comes.
