We’re a social enterprise that offers expert guidance and training to support mental health.

About us

We are Mental Health First Aid England. We’re a social enterprise with a vision to improve the mental health of the nation. Our evidence-based training gives people tools to support themselves and each other, so everyone can talk about mental health and seek help when needed. Most adults spend at least a third of their time at work, so we start there to change how society deals with mental health now and in the future. Over the last decade, we’ve provided expert consultancy and training to over 20,000 workplaces. We want mentally healthy workplaces for all. We campaign for equality between mental and physical health in the workplace. We advocate a whole organisation approach and lead by example. As a social enterprise, we reinvest our profits to support the next generation. We offer free and discounted training to those in the sports and recreation sectors working with young people. Together, let’s create a society where everyone’s mental health matters.

** Content warning: Mentions suicide ** Coinciding with World Mental Health Day, Caroline Roodhouse MCIPR, has released her book, 'Daddy Blackbird', where she reflects on her experience of returning to work after the sudden loss of her husband to suicide. Highlighting how vital prioritising mental health in the workplace truly is and how compassionate support can make all the difference, Caroline kindly shares her story on our Community blog: https://brnw.ch/21wNEfl #WMHD2024 #WMHD24 #WorkplaceMentalHealth #EmployeeWellbeing #SuicideAwareness #MentalHealthSupport (Image description: In green text on a white background, a quote from Caroline Roodhouse, Author of 'Daddy Blackbird' says: "My world changed overnight from a neat and tidy square shape, where we filled the four seats in the car and the four chairs around the table, to a wonky and unfamiliar triangle that seemed to be shunned by society. And I was broken." Two illustrated quotation marks are in the top left and bottom right corner of the quote. Below, white text on a green wave along the bottom of the image references Caroline's name with an image of her book. The MHFA England logo is in the top right corner.)

The Employment Rights Bill, marked as the "biggest upgrade to rights at work for a generation", has been released today. Vicki Cockman, Director of Delivery and Training at MHFA England®, has responded to the news: "We welcome the Government’s commitment to improving the lives of working people. Good work is good for everyone, for people, for communities and for the economy. "The Labour manifesto and King’s Speech 2024 promised to reform the NHS to ensure we give mental health the same attention and focus as physical health. This must be a priority. We also want to hear more about their commitment to supporting people experiencing poor mental health to thrive at work and what this means in practice. This requires many things, including wider workplace and employment legislation. "Many employers already have strategies in place to ensure wellbeing and productivity flourish, the Bill will mean some changes to their employment policies. For employers who have yet to develop their mental health and wellbeing strategy or equity, diversity, and inclusion policies and practices, the Bill will mean more significant shifts. "We urge the government to continue consulting and working with stakeholders to ensure that legislation works for everyone – employer and employee. Employers must have the freedom to choose environments, benefits, and policies that fit their business needs and be transparent about these offerings. This way, workers can align with practices that suit their needs, and employers can attract and retain talent who thrive in their work cultures. "At MHFA England, we’ve worked with countless businesses to create thriving workplaces. Key elements for success include strong relationships, clear purpose, psychological safety, and providing the tools and support for people to succeed." Despite torrential rain, tube delays, and a broken umbrella, I had an incredible experience visiting the MHFA England® London office and meeting Steve Blundell and Sarah Bowie in person yesterday! If you don’t know already, talking about mental health and wellbeing is a big deal and something I’m truly passionate about. So, when Steve invited me to film content for their upcoming campaigns and a case study on Experian, I jumped at the opportunity. We discussed why I became a Mental Health First Aider, how MHFA England supports you post-training, shared self-care tips, and highlighted real-life examples of how this training has saved lives. I’m really proud to have been part of this initiative and can’t wait to see the final cut. I have no doubt this won’t be the last time I work with Steve and the MHFA team—what they do is nothing short of inspiring. For anyone considering becoming a Mental Health First Aider, I highly encourage it. The training gave me the confidence to offer support when it’s needed most and, in some cases, have life-saving conversations. If that’s not reason enough to get trained, I don’t know what is!
